Alan M. Howe
Alan Massey Howe, 60, of Wilmington, lost his battle with cancer Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010.
He was born Oct. 8, 1949, in Hamlet, to the late John Elmer and Louise Howe.
He is survived by his wife, Gay Phifer Howe; daughters, Yve, of Emerald Isle, and Alanna, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; brothers, Michael Howe, of Hamlet, and John Howe and Will Willford, of Palm Springs, Calif.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degree in teaching from UNC-Chapel Hill, Alan taught English in Goose Creek, S.C., before pursuing a career in software engineering. He worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories and later consulted for companies such as NYNEX and Air Canada.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Hamlet with the Rev. Eugene Tyson officiating. A reception with the family will follow at 203 Palm St.
Alan was a truly unique individual with a flare for the obscure. He will be missed dearly.
