MCCONKY

Lona Gage McConky, 82, of Southern Pines, passed away Monday, Aug. 30, at St. Joseph of the Pines. She had been suffering from dementia for many years, the last two and a half at St. Joseph’s.
Lona and her husband, Fred, moved to the Sandhills 20 years ago, first to Pinehurst, and then to Southern Pines. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. Lona had been active in Newcomers, book clubs, the Pinehurst Tennis Association, was a member of Community Presbyterian Church, Christian Bible Study, and secretary of the Moore County branch of the North Carolina Symphony. She loved music and traveling, experiencing numerous wonderful destinations.
Lona was born in El Campo, Texas, to Florence Comstock, and grew up there. She graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She then moved to Houston, Texas, where she and Fred met and married.
Lona had a son, David; and a daughter, Laura; two grandsons; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Community Presbyterian Church, Pinehurst.
