William J. King
William Junior King, 84, of Concord, died Thursday, March 11, 2010, at CMC, Charlotte.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Kittie M. Sansom Chapel, Barber Scotia College, with the Rev Donald Anthony officiating. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis.
Mr. King was born Feb. 27, 1926, in Marlboro County, S.C., to the late Tommie and Louise Williams King.
Mr. King served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from Cabarrus County Schools. He was a member of Grace Lutheran church, Logan Optimist Club, N.C. A&T Alumni Association, Retired State Personnel, American Legion, Mt. Zion Masonic Lodge and the Jessie McCain Order of Eastern Star.
He was on the board of directors for Cabarrus County Meals on Wheels and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was on the Advisory Committee for Assisted Living Facilities, a volunteer for Help Line, the Soup Kitchen and many other volunteer organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Vernie P. King, of the home; three daughters, Merva McKinney, of West End, Wilma King Means and Theresa Hillie (Calvin), both of Concord; son, Samuel King (Elaine), of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren; sister, Annie Robinson (Sampson), of New York, N.Y; two brothers, Robert King (Doris), of Springfield Gardens, N.Y. and Johnnie King (Juanita), of Aberdeen; son-in-law, Donnell Means, of Concord; two aunts, Ruth Nelson, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Doretha Benjamin, of Darlington, S.C; sister-in-law, Elnora Barrier (Robert Sr.), of Concord; brother-in-law, Jesse Pharr (Jennie), of Concord; foster daughter, LaVerne Davis, of Charlotte, and foster granddaughter, La Gueena Wentz, of Rock Hill, S.C.; and close friend of the family, William Murphy.
In addition to both parents, two great-grandchildren preceded William in death.
