Florence Margaret Hodder Toohey Smith, 89, of Pinehurst, died Sunday, March 14, 2010.
She was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Pa., and graduated from Allegheny High School. She was a long-time employee of First Federal Savings and Loan Association in Pittsburgh, Pa. Athletic by nature, she enjoyed basketball, tennis, volleyball, and later in life, golf. She was also an avid bridge player.
Widowed after 23 years of marriage to William Joseph Toohey, she raised three daughters as a single mother. In 1970, she married her current husband, Paul F. Smith Sr., becoming mother to four stepchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Smith retired to Pinehurst in 1983, where they participated in the local golf and tennis leagues and were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Paul F. Smith Sr.; seven children, Kathleen Toohey Andrews, Nancy Smith Kelly, Paul F. Smith Jr., Barbara Toohey, Michael Smith, Joyce Toohey and Stephen Smith; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Boles Funeral Home, Southern Pines. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in her honor at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel at St. Joseph of the Pines, Southern Pines. Interment will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Southern Pines.
