Norman L. Monroe

Norman Leroy Monroe, 84, of Southern Pines, died Monday, April 26, 2010, at Pinehurst Health and Rehabilitation.
A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Boles Funeral Home Chapel in Southern Pines, with Dr. David Bowling officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. before the service.
Mr. Monroe was born in 1925, in Raleigh, to the late Alton Onus Monroe and Beulah Mae Gillis Monroe. For many years he was a building contractor in the Moore County area and was instrumental in the expansion of the FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. Mr. Monroe was a past member of the Manly Presbyterian Church, where he served as the superintendent of the Sunday school for 25 years. He was most recently member of the Community Congregational Church in Southern Pines. He was an avid golfer and loved to work in his yard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Lou Monroe; his son, Jerry Lee Monroe and wife, Linda, of Clayton; his daughter, Sheryl Lynn Phillips and husband, Robert, of Aberdeen; sisters, Gladys Mae Jaksic and Annie Grace Martin, both of Southern Pines; two grandsons, Lee of Sugar Hill, Ga., and Jonathan, of Wilmington; and a great-granddaughter, Mikayla.
