Peter M. Baran

Peter Michael Baran, 58, of Vass, passed Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Baran was born Oct. 3, 1951, in New Rochelle, N.Y., to Walter Baran and Margaret "Peg" Grace Osterhoudt Baran.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday April 23, 2010, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, with the Rev. John G. Tampa, the Rev. Rebecca DeBow, the Rev. Megan Kelly and Dr. Glenda Curry officiating.
Mr. Baran graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with a major in ceramic art from Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. He later volunteered with the Peace Corps in St. Lucia and Antigua and taught art at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. He retired after 22 years with Norton Company and volunteered and served for six years on the vestry and as senior warden of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Indian Springs, Ala. Mr. Baran was a partner in several businesses including an Essential Architecture firm and Baran Investments.
Mr. Baran is survived by his wife of 17 years, Paula Reynolds Baran; daughters, Grace Aslan Baran, of Vass, and Heather Brinson Jackson and husband, Patrick, of Birmingham, Ala.; a granddaughter, Honor Elizabeth Jackson, of Birmingham, Ala.; his mother, Margaret “Peg” Grace Baran, of Pinehurst; a sister, Jane Baran Wells and husband, David, and their family, of Potsdam, N.Y.; a brother, Jeffrey Walter Baran and his wife, Judy, and their family, of Wake Forest; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Baran, in 1994.
