Charles F. Rowley Jr.

Charles Freeman Rowley Jr., born in Chestnut Hill, Mass., January 23, 1921, died at his farm in Pinehurst, on Wednesday, April 7, 2010.
After attending Deerfield Academy, he graduated from Harvard University in 1943. Charles served during World War II as a lieutenant Navy pilot in the Pacific, where he was in the 27 Air Group and received the Air Medal for his part in several missions. He was on the carrier, USS Princeton, when it was sunk. After the war, he continued to work for the Navy as a test pilot for several years.
Charles was a past president of Shoreacres Country Club in Lake Bluff, Ill., and current member of the Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest, Ill., the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, and Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Golf was a passion and his fellow players would often turn to him for his instruction on the course.
He was a member of the AKC and the Driving Club of Southern Pines.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Christiane; his son, Eric, daughter-in-law, Marcia; three grandchildren, Blake, Catherine and Alexandra, of Lake Forest, Ill.; and brother, Hunter Rowley, of Atlanta, Ga..

Memorial services will be private.
