D. Hugh McLean, 81, of Vass, died Friday, April 2, 2010, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Vass Presbyterian Church with the Rev. W.W. Olney and the Rev. Bruce Benton officiating. Burial followed in Cypress Presbyterian Church cemetery with military and fireman’s honors.
Mr. McLean was born July 16, 1928, in Moore County, to the late Neill and Lillian Smith McLean. He was a lifelong member of the Vass Presbyterian Church, serving as clerk of the session, an elder and adult Sunday School teacher. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was active in the community, serving more than 25 years to the town of Vass either as mayor or town commissioner. He joined the Vass Fire Department in 1952 and served as fire chief for over 40 years. He was known around Vass as “Chief.” He served as president of the Moore County Fire Chief Association for many years and was instrumental in the advancement of fire service in Moore County.
He is survived by his son, David McLean, of Cameron; a daughter, Gail McLean, of Columbia, Md.; and two grandsons.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Vass Fire Department.
