The Pinecrest boys’ golf team picked up a win in the inaugural North State High School Challenge held at Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford Friday and Saturday.
The Patriots, paced by medalist Josh Martin’s 147, finished with a two-day total of 625.
Runner-up Forestview had a 630, while Broughton High School, the state 4-A champions last year, finished third with a 633 total.
Martin, shot 76-71, to edge Forestview’s Will Long, 73-75—148, by one stroke for medalist honors.
Martin’s 71 was the only score under par for the two-day tournament played on the Lakes course at Carolina Trace.
Patriot coach Jennifer Kearney indicated that the course conditions were very challenging and that the Bermuda greens were playing very firm.
Both days were also beset by windy weather, she said.
Rounding out the four scores used in the team results for Pinecrest were Zach Martin, 77-81—158, James Sugg, 80-81—161, and Josh Stockwell, 86-77—163.
Also playing in the tournament for the Patriots was Austin Scarboro, 82-86—168.
The tournament was conducted by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association and the NC Junior Golf Foundation.
