The Union Pines boys’ golf team took home the title at the 2013 Anderson Creek High School Elite Golf Championship Friday in Spring Lake.
Viking senior Cody Roberts set the pace for Union Pines by carding a 75 on the 6,400-yard layout designed by Davis Love III to earn medalist honors for the second time this week.
Joining Roberts for Union Pines was sophomore Ben Chrystler with a round of 83, followed by senior Cal Parsons with an 85 and sophomore Bryan D’Ostroph at 89.
The four scores combined together equaled a Vike team score of 332, which was good enough to give Union Pines the tournament trophy.
“The conditions were very windy and still chilly,” said Viking head coach Alan Cox. “The greens were fast and as a team we did not play as well as we could. But we continued to play hard to give ourselves a chance at competing in this event and were fortunate that our team score was low enough for us to have success.”
The win was the second of the week for Union Pines, which claimed a league victory Monday in Sanford with a team score of 323 at Carolina Lakes Golf Club. Roberts carded a 1-under-par 71 to capture medalist honors as the lowest individual in the 3-A Cape Fear Valley conference meet.
On the season Union Pines is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference competition.
Southern Lee, also of the CFVC, placed second in Thursday’s Anderson Creek Elite event with a runner-up tally of 336.
The tournament featured 10 teams including third-place Southeast Guilford with a 340, Holly Springs (341), followed by Page (343), Cardinal Gibbons (345), Lee County (353), Grimsley (359), Overhills (379) and Northwood Temple (394).
Tim Conover of Holly Springs shot a 76 to finish as the individual runner-up.
Rounding out the top-five golfers at the championship were Southern Lee’s Zane Lewis, Justin Curis (Cardinal Gibbons), Jackson Neff (Page) and Ralph Mays (Page) — all of whom tied for third at 81.
Union Pines hits the links for week three of CFVC league action Monday at King’s Grant Golf and Country Club in Fayetteville.
The conference competition is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
