Dusty Rhoades’ disgusting column “Pope Gets His Exit Interview,” mocking Benedict XVI, a humble servant of God, managed to exceed even my worst expectations of how low Rhoades will stoop to garner an audience.
Unfortunately, it will take more than The Pilot’s printing of one well-written letter of outrage from Michael Colozzi (“Not Laughing,” March 8) to blunt the sour taste of Rhoades’ cheap and mean-spirited verbiage.
It may be that The Pilot values Dusty Rhoades’ unchecked poison pen above the loss of some longtime readership.

How is it that a 'humble servant of God' wore Prada? Really!

Shame, shame, shame on the lowest form of life, attorney Rhoades. Satire against a Pope, why don't you just erect the stake to burn yourself. It would save some steps.

Remember that Dusty always calls his trash satire...then he can mouth off about anything disgusting and claim it's just fun. I'm waiting for his next satire piece on the Pilot's desire to be able to know who owns firearms in Moore County and make it available to the public.

Well, I thought we were finished with this but I guess not huh? The question remains "Should religious leaders, including the Pope, be given sacred cow status?" That is, should no one ever question their motives or actions? As I interpreted the article, the Pope was not slandered or defamed but shown to be human just like the rest of us. It also seems to me that the new Pope Francis I wants this for himself and has lived it for the past many years. I wish him well in this endeavor. I hope he can continue to do it. I'll say it again, the people who were most upset with Jesus weren't the irreverent ones; they were the ones who considered themselves to be perfect.

Maybe if the Pope didn't wear such funny hats, he might get a little more respect.

I am not Catholic, but Pope Francis seems like the kindest soul on earth: http://news.yahoo.com/pope-tests-security-detail-wading-crowd-161444346.html. What an amazing time for the Catholic church. My prayers and best wishes to all my Catholic brothers and sisters, and my prayers and best wishes to Pope Francis. Cheers to all!

Maybe if popes would do more than bury their heads in rosaries while priests rape the altar boys they would have more respect!
And this is from an ex catholic...............

It does not shock me that some people are still upset over this - in a world that admires Kim Kardashian, Honey Boo Boo and Dennis Roddman, anything is possible. To me a great attribute in character is the ability to laugh at one's own self. I'll say it again; He is a human, elected by humans, to rule over and guide human behavior and beliefs. While I am sure he is a wonderful man and the best choice for the job at this time, you can bet there was all kinds of behind the scenes political jousting and scuffles to see who came out on top. I do wish him the best of luck as I do all Catholics. I do hope he can bring to light all of the problems the church currently has and restore it's good name in this troubled time.

One can't help but wonder if Papa Francis 1 will sell all the gold on the alter and give the proceeds to the poor? The Vatican could get a good deal on chalices and host platens in the upper end of Poorer County or Seagrove.

"The U.S. Cardinals said they are going to develop a code of ethics to help them deal with the sexual scandal. Wait a minute, I thought their already was a code of ethics, it's called the Bible." —Jay Leno
"As you've probably heard, the Pope has asked all the Cardinals to return to Rome. You know how they got them all to come back? They told them that there was going to be a performance by the Vienna Boys Choir." —Jay Leno

dentman65-what a classy response. Others should learn from your example.
I'm not Catholic either.

First, for the tenor of the article. From Dusty Rhoades and the Pilot Editorial staff, I expect no better.
Second, with the Catholic Church as with any large Church or business for that matter, there is always the element of corruption from within. As there are all sorts of personal moralities, and all sorts of temptations, the chances of corporate breakdown, are real. Third, what the Pilot doesn't want to realize, is there are more than liberals who read this paper. the conservatives read this [those that do] only for local information , not the politics and certainly not for the' wisdom' of Dusty Rhoades. To those that take umbrage at the smear tactics disguised as humor by Dusty, please understand, that's the best Dusty can do. [and I'm surprised he didn't get a mental hernia when he wrote it.] [my attempt at humor]

njc - The Catholic Church problem isn't corruption from within; it's corruption from top to bottom. There's a difference.
Their history of child-abuse cover ups is beyond disgraceful.

Mr Heim, please cut the generalizations. That statement is TOTALLY untrue. You evidently dony like the Catholic Church, or Christianity in general.
dustyrhoades 2 months ago
As long as deniers like njc continue to play the martyr and claim any criticism of the Church is motivated purely by a 'dislike of Catholics or Christians in general", its problems aren't going to get solved.

wdd - The Republicans here have no office either. What's their excuse?
It happens that this is a small county. There is not enough political activity to justify the expense. There is no point to having a full-time office if you're not in a position to hire a full-time staffer for it.
The majority of county parties (both R & D) only have headquarters during the election season. And then only in presidential election years. It's a matter of economics. I wouldn't expect you to understand.

You're living in a state that until the 1970s had a clause in its constitution forbidding non-protestants from holding office. The new constitution only requires office holders to believe in some kind of spirit being.
Progress, I guess.

I,m beginning to believe the non-Catholics appreciate the new Pope,s personality and demeanor more than the Catholics. He seems not to take himself too serious. I like his down to earth attitude.
DoubleHeroides 2 months ago
@Native: I agree. I can’t say for sure whether it was Mr. Rhodes’ intent at the time that he wrote it but I took his column to be a way to humanize a person who people find a hard time relating to. The pope is a pretty larger than life person who speaks in a dead language most people don’t understand. I think casting him in the light of a normal person, an everyday guy who has to take an exit interview from a job just like I’ve done before, just like a lot of people have done before, helps people understand what the heck the pope even is, a man like any other. Jesus was a pretty down to earth guy people can / could relate to, I don’t think a lot of people feel the same way about the (any) pope who is supposed to be representing the church.

Here is another Pope Exit Interview for you, which pictures for those of you that read slow: http://dustinland.com/archives/archives590.html It's by a Dustin (coincedent?)
