Richard’s Hat Trick Leads Vikes — Again

Kooba Richard collected her second straight hat trick of the season Thursday for Union Pines in a 4-1 Lady Viking soccer victory over 4-A Scotland High in Laurinburg.

With the win the visiting Vikes improved to 2-0-0 on the season.

The center midfielder also found the back of the net three times in Union Pines’ season-opening 4-1 win on the road against Hoke County.

Union Pines’ other two returning NCSCA all-region selections from last season are senior fullback Elena D’Argenio and junior forward/midfielder Hanna Kiser.

Senior midfielder Becca Greene also scored a goal for Union Pines and had an assist Thursday in the non-league victory over the Fight Scots.

The Vikings remain on the road for their next match today (Wednesday) in Spring Lake, to take on league rival Overhills (1-1-1) in their 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference opener.

Lady Vikes Win League Opener

The Union Pines Lady Viking softball team claimed a 7-3 victory over Douglas Byrd in its 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference opener Friday in Fayetteville.

With the victory Union Pines improved to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play.

Leading the way for the Viking offense on the night was Keilie Poindexter, going 2-for-2 with an RBI, walk and two runs scored. Brooke Briggs (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Kyrin Walker (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) also had multiple-hit performances in the tilt for Union Pines.

In the top of the seventh inning all three players crossed home, along with Union Pines junior center fielder Lexie Coxe in a four-run rally that gave the Vikes a 7-2 lead. Trailing 1-0 though two innings of action, the Vikes tied the game at 1-all when Briggs plated Poindexter with a single to center field.

A two-out RBI off the bat of Poindexter brought home Taylor Davis in the top of the fourth to give Union Pines a 2-1 lead.

Walker led off the top of the sixth for Union Pines with a double to center and later scored on an RBI single by Davis, who finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate, to push the lead to 3-1.

Byrd answered with a single tally in the bottom half of the game, before Union Pines busted the game open with the four-run seventh-inning rally.

Along with having a good night with the bat Walker earned the complete-game pitching victory for Union Pines, allowing three runs on five hits and no free passes while fanning six Eagle batters.

Union Pines was scheduled to play conference foe Overhills Tuesday but the game was moved to tonight (Wednesday).
