Patriot Girls Second in Relays

Mulloy Manning, Kelsey Rea, Jaleigh Jensen and Jennie Cunningham set a new Pinecrest school record in the distance medley relay at the Tiger Relays held at Reid Ross Classical School in Fayetteville on Saturday.

The Patriot girls and boys combined to win a total of five relay events. South View won both team competitions. The Patriot girls finished second, just one point back of South View. The Patriot boys came in seventh.

Sophomore Abby Verchick of Union Pines was second in the girls’ 3,200-meter run and third in the freshman-sophomore 1,600-meter run.

The Patriot distance medley quartet’s time of 12:54 eclipsed the mark of 13:04 set by Lauren Bishop, Lexie Schustrom, Jacklyn McElligott and Amanda McKinney in 2007.

The other relay firsts for the Patriots girls were by Rea, Jensen, Cunningham and Christina Stone in the 1,600, Manning, Jensen, Cunningham and Sarah Pressley in the 3,200, and Janea Williams, Alysha Gaffney, Juanita Gibbs and Zuri Thomas in the 100-meter thrower event

Williams also picked up a first-place medal in the high jump and was fourth in the shot put.

Among the others earning points for their teams by finishing in the top eight of an event were Thomas, sixth in the discus; Gibbs, eighth in the long jump; and Lilly Majuri of Union Pines, seventh in the 300 hurdles.

Also for the Patriots, Rachel Von Cannon was fifth in the fresh-soph 1,600 and Stone, Destiny Brown, Megan Forro and Dessence Waddell placed fifth in the 800-meter relay.

The Patriot quartet of Chris Kelly, Becket Killam, Will Pearson and Jacob Trautman won the boys’ distance medley. The same runners also finished sixth in the 1,600 relay.

Also for the Patriot boys, Kelly and Pearson took second and third in the 1,600, Javier Bustos was third in the 3,200 and Jay Harris was fourth in the pole vault.
