North Moore Splits in Tennis

The North Moore boys’ tennis team got off to a good start under coach Angie Shepard.
After not being able to complete their opening season match hosting South Stanly due to darkness, the Mustangs traveled to North Rowan March 4 for a Yadkin Valley Conference match.
North Moore swept all six singles matches and dropped only one of the doubles match, for an 8-1 victory. The Mustangs continued the conference slate entertaining Albemarle Thursday. The Bulldogs turned the tables on the Mustangs, winning by an 8-1 score.
In the North Rowan match, the Mustangs’ No. 1 player, junior Josh Jones, blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 while No. 2, junior Austin Hunsucker, won his match 6-2, 6-0.
The Mustangs’ lone senior starter, Mason Williams, swept his match 6-2, 6-2 while North Moore sophomore Jacob Marley shut out his foe 6-0, 6-0.
The closest match of the contest was at No. 5 where Mustang sophomore Danny Aquirre won the first set 6-3 and then battled to a 7-5 win in the second set. Alejandro Mendoza won at No. 6 for the Mustangs by a 6-0, 6-1 score.
In doubles play, Jones and Williams teamed up to win at No. 1 by an 8-3 score while the No. 2 team of Hunsucker and Mendoza dropped their match 4-8. Marley and Anselmo Gonzales won 8-1.
In the Albemarle match, Aquirre was the lone victor, winning at No. 5 singles by a 6-4, 6-2 score over Truman Furr. Marley put up a good fight at No. 4, losing the first set 6-2 and battled back in the second set before falling 7-5.
The Mustangs step out of conference action when they travel to Southwestern Randolph Tuesday. Their next home match is March 14 when they host East Montgomery. Both matches are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
