Vikes Win in Extra Innings

With an 8-5 win over the Asheboro Blue Comets in extra innings Monday the 3-A Union Pines Vikings baseball team improved to 2-1 on the season.
The visiting Vikes scored five runs in the final two innings of the non-league contest to claim a comeback win against the 3-A Blue Comets (1-2) in Asheboro.
Trailing 5-2 through four innings of play, Union Pines got a run on an RBI single by junior left-fielder Phillip Hall that plated senior Noble Davis, who reached with a single to lead off the inning.
Union Pines then got a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Mason Collins led off the inning by drawing a walk and promptly stole second base. Two wild pitches brought him home to make it a 5-4 game.
Down to their last out the Vikes hopes rested on the shoulders of sophomore first baseman Kyle Robinson.
With runners on first and second Robinson was saddled with a 2-2 count when he roped a ground ball down the left-field line to tie the game at 5-all.
In their extra-frame at-bat Union Pines tallied three runs.
Junior Emmitt Carden led off the top of the eight with an infield single. Davis got him to second on a sacrifice while beating out the throw to first for an infield hit. Collins then got a sacrifice fly to center that moved Carden to third with one out.
Next senior Jeffrey Thompson smoked a ball to right field, for an RBI single. The right fielder in turn misplayed the ball, allowing Davis and Thompson to come around and score the finals two runs of the game on a three-base error that brought the tilt to its final 8-5 tally.
Thompson pitched the final four innings of the game to pick up the win. In the bottom of the eighth inning the Vike senior southpaw struck out the first two Blue Comet batters he faced before getting a fly out to right field to end the game
Davis started on the mound for Union Pines, putting in four innings of work in which he allowed five runs (four of which were unearned), gave up no walks and fanned three batters.
Union Pines leading hitters on the night were: Thompson 3-3, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 SB, RBI; Carden 3-5, 2B, 2 R, Collins 2-4, BB, 2 Runs, 2 SB, RBI and Robinson 2-4, 2B RBI
Union Pines is back in action against 1-A East Montgomery (1-1), Thursday at 7 p.m. in Cameron at Viking Field.
