The Overhills Jaguars picked up four victories in quadruple-header league basketball action Tuesday at Bob Ward Gym in Cameron.
In the first of the two varsity tilts the Lady Vikings fell 43-36 to Overhills. The Jaguars remained undefeated in 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference standings with a mark of 7-0 and moved to 11-5 overall. With the loss the Union Pines girls' fell to 3-4 in conference play and 7-11 on the season.
Freshman Stephanie Johnson led Union Pines in rebounding and scoring with a 12-point, 11-board double-double. Junior Lexie Coxe chipped in with seven points, six rebounds and three steals for the Vikes. Junior 6-foot forward Tiffany Hicks had seven points, seven rebounds and two assists in her season debut coming off of a knee surgery.
Leading the way for the Lady Jaguars was senior guard Katelyn Clark with 19 points and 6 steals. She was joined in double-figure scoring by sophomore small forward Ge'Naisha Robinson, who recorded a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Overhills was simply too deep and athletic in the night cap as the Jaguars bested the Viking varsity boys' 63-54.
With the win the Jags improved to 10-5 on the season and moved to 5-2 in the CFVC standings
Union Pines, which dropped to 0-7 in the league and 4-15 overall, trailed by a point at the end of three periods of play with the score 47-46. Overhills outscored Union Pines 16-8 in the last quarter to come away with the road victory.
The Jags had 11 players score in the game. Leading the way was the duo of junior guard Jared Foster and senior swingman Josh Mason each with 10 points.
Senior captain Matthew Maness led Union Pines with 13 points. Vikes Malik Crawford, Luke Davis and Jeffrey Thompson each scored eight points apiece. Senior forward Dionte Williams had a game-high 14 rebounds on the night for the Vikings.
Earlier in junior varsity action the Viking jayvee girls' dropped their first league game of the season with a 28-22 loss to Overhills. Following that contest the Union Pines jayvee boys' had a late comeback charge fall just short in a 44-43 loss to the Jaguars.
All four Union Pines basketball squads return to action Friday. The junior varsity boys' and both varsity Viking teams will go against CFVC foe Gray's Creek in a triple-header in Hope Mills. The three-game event tips off with the jayvee boys' tilt at 4:30 p.m. Back in Cameron the Union Pines junior varsity girls' host the 1-A Chatham Central Bears in a nonconfernece game at 5 p.m. at Bob Ward Gymnasium.
