O'Neal Boys Top Fayetteville Christian

It was a record-breaking day for Jacob Talbert and a good win for the O'Neal boys Tuesday.

The Falcons knocked off visiting Fayetteville Christian at the Bradshaw Activities Center 55-54 to pick up its fifth win in six games.

Fayetteville Christian rallied late, but Talbert canned five-of-six free throws to ice the Cape Fear Valley Conference game in which the Falcons never trailed. Talbert finished with a double-double, scoring 27 points and 10 rebounds. More impressive, he is now the school's leading career scorer with a total of 1,209 points.

Theo Johnson added nine points for the Falcons (8-8 overall, 3-1 conference), while John Roger Moore and Jack Johnston chipped in with six points each.

O'Neal faces Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington on Friday, then travels to Coastal Christian on Saturday.

Viking Girls Let Lead Slip Away

The Union Pines girls' basketball team let a 15-point halftime lead slip away Tuesday at Bob Ward Gymnasium in dropping a 52-49 decision to Westover in league action.

After the third quarter of action the Lady Vikings led 39-28 in the 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference clash.

In the final quarter the visiting Lady Wolverines outscored the Vikes 24-10 to come away from Cameron with a critical league win.

With the victory Westover improved to 3-2 in the CFVC and 10-6 overall. The loss saw the Vikes drop to 3-3 in league action and 7-10 overall for the season.

Leading the Vikings in scoring for the night was freshman point guard MaRisa Smith with 14 points. Vike freshman center Stephanie Johnson joined Smith in double figures with 11 points.

Union Pines has a game tonight (Friday) at 6 p.m. against conference rival Douglas Byrd (1-13, 1-5 CFVC).

Westover Defeats Viking Boys

The Westover Wolverines topped the Union Pines boys' basketball team 96-51 in a league tilt Tuesday in Cameron.

The visiting Wolverines jumped out to a 33-10 lead after one period and carried a 61-34 edge into halftime of the 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference contest.

Union Pines was outscored 23-12 in the third quarter.

With the loss Union Pines moved to 4-14 on the season and remained in last place in the CFVC with a league mark of 0-6. Westover improved to 13-3 overall and stayed undefeated atop the league with a conference record of 5-0.

Senior captain Matthew Maness led Union Pines with 14 points. Joining him in double-digit scoring was senior captain Jeffrey Thompson with 10 points.

Union Pines is home Friday to face Douglas Byrd (6-11, 3-3 CFVC) at 7:30 p.m. in league action.
