Union Pines Sweeps Conference Swimming Championships
The Union Pines Vikings took home league championships in both boys' and girls' swimming Tuesday evening at Nathan Johnson Natatorium on the campus of Campbell University in Buies Creek.
Leading the way in a dominant Lady Viking victory were junior Cassidy Fry and freshman Lily Majuri, each scoring 28 individual points.
Fry collected her third straight 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference titles in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke, while Majuri took home championships in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle.
Both swimmers were also members of Union Pines winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard free relay teams.
Union Pines finished with a winning tally of 295 for a staggering 127-point margin of victory over runner-up Western Harnett on its way to capturing a third straight conference crown.
The Overhills girls' took third place with 133 points.
Union Pines head coach Beth Christensen was named the conference girls' coach of the year, while Fry and Majuri shared swimmer of the year honors with Gray's Creek's Jordan Philips. Viking junior Ashlyn Owens also placed in the top-five girls' scorers in the meet with 20 points.
In the boys' championship Union Pines won the final event, the 400 free relay, to edge out Gray's Creek by three points and claim a second straight CFVC title.
The Vikings finished with a total of 203, while Gray's Creek scored 200. Western Harnett placed third with a total of 178. Southern Lee scored 155 to take fourth place but had three swimmers in Kevin Martinez, Will Maness and Eli Brightbill each score 28 points to share boys' swimmer of the year honors.
Gray's Creek's Erin Fruland was named the boys' coach of the year.
Junior Patrick O'Sullivan was the highest scoring swimmer for Union Pines with 25 points. The total placed him fourth overall in the meet, followed directly by Vike freshman Gavin Moulton who tallied 21 points to round out the boys' top-five scorers.
