Absurd Outcry

With disbelief I read the news report written to announce a rally in support of the Second Amendment being held at a local gun shop.

The fearmongering promoted by Fox News and the local political establishment is unsettling and unnecessary. How many times does the reassurance have to be repeated that the intent for the proposed gun regulations has nothing to do with capturing guns held legally and used properly?

The outcry that “I will not be told what guns I may own” or “The government is going to take my guns so they can enslave me” is absurd and speaks to someone ignorant of how democracy works.

Democracy’s strength is the adherence to laws written and enforced for the good of the people. The citizens declare in the ballot box how they want to be governed. Somehow the local constituency seems to feel that because the GOP lost the national election and the people spoke loud and clear, these tenets of democracy don’t apply.

Is there reason that the crazies can’t be weeded out and prevented from gunning down a crowd of people because they’ve been jilted? Would the attendees attending the rally at the gun shop be just as comfortable holding the rally at Pinehurst Elementary School?

It’s the self-serving individuals who have never had the knock on the front door, or the phone call in the middle of the night reporting someone’s death, that feel, “I have rights and you won’t impinge on them at any cost.” This kind of democracy will lead to anarchy.

Sadly, those 26 adults and children from Sandy Hook Elementary School cannot express their opinions.

Mr. Grey, Outstanding letter. The gun lobby wants the gun crazies to believe that the government can take away guns and has worked up the ignorant into a frenzy to buy guns. The government CANNOT take away arms and CANNOT infringe upon the right to bear arms.

However, it can place restrictions and has. After all, the government has already restricted machine guns. Does anyone truly believe that the restriction on machine guns should be lifted? Why should the public be entitled to weapons designed for the military and law enforcement?

PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT AMERICA IS A DEMOCRACY. Yes, the majority rules, but the minority has political rights that are defended by the constitution---not by weapons.

Mr. Gray...absurd is the FACT that obumma, by himself with a stroke of the pen, has outlawed millions of LEGALLY OWNED semi-auto rifles with no justification other than he doesn't like firearms. Despite the millions of these legally owned rifles already out there in law abiding hands he seems to think this will somehow make "gun free zones" safer. Now you say that there is no threat to other legally owned firearms because we don't know how democracy works...sort of silly comment there Mr. Gray because if obumma can outlaw millions of legally owned semi-auto rifles with the stroke of a pen then he also has the power to outlaw other legally owned firearms, at the stroke of a pen. Gun rights in jeapardy?? When you get more than five or six liberal democrats together then you better believe it!!

Mr. Skylinefirepest: You must read Dusty Rhoades column today!!!!!!

You are one of the SWORS victims who has lost the ability to understand what has really happened. The executive orders have nothing to do with what you think they do. They say nothing about confiscation or banning of any guns.

If you, sir, are so big and brave, I demand that you quit hiding like a little girl and start making you asinine comments and referring to the President of the United States as "obumma" under your real name so all can see who you are. Dusty Rhoades has no problem doing that, Jim Heim has no problem doing that, I have no problem doing that. Why are you such a two bit coward? Art you afraid the boogeyman will get you? I have had it with your crap. Come out in the open and fight like a man.

0

bufordsplay 3 months, 4 weeks ago

Sorry Kzowens but the second amendment is not an entitlement, its a right. As far as SWORS, what about Bob Schiefer comparing Obama's fight with the NRA to fighting the Nazis and Bin Laden? Or Chuck Schumer calling the NRA an extremist fringe group? 30 million people, or 10% of the American people are NRA members. The truth is the Democrats are gutless cowards who won't admit that there would be no first or second amendment if they had their way. They don't want to protect the children in the schools because that would actually curb these mass killings and that would hamper their efforts. Mayor Bloomberg himself said that they [the Left] would need another mass school shooting in order to get their gun control measures through congress.

Mr. Bufordsplay, I really do not get your point. In fact, I do not think you have a point. You are just spewing absurdities, and I do not think you know what the second amendment says. You and the groups gathering at the gun shops to support it obviously DO NOT know what it means.

That was, on a whole, a great letter. I think the majority of people even local posters who are responsible gun owners know that. This is a forum where we can express our differences of opinion in a mature manner. That being said, there are a lot of people who do not want the government to involve itself any further into our personal lives. They're celebrating the 2nd amendment along with their freedom of speech. I don't think anything that was proposed will put a real dent in preventing crazies from murdering innocent people with a firearm or any other sort of weapon. Our country is reeling from the Sandy Hook tragedy. I think our politicians felt a need to do something because of public outcry but demonizing lawful gun owners who are asking serious questions about the governments reach is unnecessary. Sure they have nothing to worry about (or do they?). They are lawful responsible gun owners but when people are pitted against one another for political reasons (which I'm sure they knew would happen) the government knows it will further divide the people and damage the other party by making them out to be insensitive blood thirsty savages. Doctors asking patients about their gun ownership is a tad too big brother for me.

Additionally, starting dialogues and putting together committees looks like action but honestly what will it really accomplish? We've been through this before.

0

Food for thought on this and many other current events:

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by dictatorship.

(CNN) -- A youth is charged with murder after five people were killed in New Mexico, authorities said Sunday.

Investigators believe the assailant used multiple weapons, including "an assault-type rifle," the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department said. Deputies responded to an address in southwest Albquerque on Saturday night to find the five victims -- a man, a woman, a boy and two girls, according to a statement from the department.

"All the victims appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds," the statement said. Several weapons were found inside the residence.

"One male juvenile is in custody and is being charged with two counts of murder, and three counts of child abuse resulting in death," the department said.

Neither the identities and ages of the victims nor of the suspect were immediately released.

@buforsplay, What planet do you live on? ............."They don't want to protect the children in the schools because that would actually curb these mass killings and that would hamper their efforts.".........

First of all, the President has recommended that there be armed guards in schools, where have you been? Didn't it fit your crazy agenda? Your post is a perfect example of what is so terribly wrong with the mind set of those who spew hate and insanity on this subject. Anyone who would actually believes what you posted is not of sound mind and should not own weapons. How sad for you to go through life with the kind of paranoia and irrationality you displayed in your comment. You do no good for your cause. With friends like you, who needs enemies? Any sensible gun owner would recoil at your comments and distance themselves as far as possible from your kind of sick thinking.

Here are the 23 things President Obama has signed executive orders on. Not ONE of them bans assault weapons or takes ANY weapon away.

Will Mr. Pest admit he was wrong? Of course not. He's a right winger.

  1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
  2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
  3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
  4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
  5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
  6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
  7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
  8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
  9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
  10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
  11. Nominate an ATF director.
  12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
  13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
  14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
  15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies
  16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
  17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
  18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
  19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
  20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
  21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
  22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
  23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.
0

dustyrhoades 3 months, 4 weeks ago

Here is what the President has called upon CONGRESS to do, but he has not, as Mr. Pest states, "with a stroke of the pen...outlawed millions of LEGALLY OWNED semi-auto rifles":

Require criminal background checks for all gun sales. (a.k.a. closing the "gun show loophole.")

Reinstate and strengthen the assault weapons ban.

Restore the 10-round limit on ammunition magazines.

Protect police by finishing the job of getting rid of armor-piercing bullets.

Give law enforcement additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime.

End the freeze on gun violence research.

Make our schools safer with more school resource officers and school counselors, safer climates, and better emergency response plans.

Help ensure that young people get the mental health treatment they need.

Ensure health insurance plans cover mental health benefits.

Will Mr. Pest admit he was wrong? Of course he won't.

Let me carry this a step further Mr. gun owning lawyer...aka extreme obumma lover. What is an assault rifle by legal definition? Since you are a self professed gun owner I would really expect you to know. You've been ranting about banning the nasty assault rifles just like your annointed one and he ( if he knows what they are ) is just going for the re-banning of these semi-auto rifles that are used in a very small percentage of criminal acts. So since you insist on spouting the party line then do you know what you're talking about??

0

Mr. Bufordsplay and Mr. Skylinefirepest, I guess I'm retarded because I always have a problem comprehending what either of you try to get at. I read and re-read your posts and go all the way back to the beginning, but I still don't get it. Renee Ellmers missed a golden opportunity to educate the uninformed at the support group at the local gun shop for the Second Amendment. Even if she had tried to, I doubt that you would have believed her even though she is one of your own. Maybe she feared that you wouldn't reelect her.

skylinefirepest (the coward who is afraid to be named), a weapon that is capable of firing 30, 50,100 rounds by simply twitching your finger is a weapon that civilian cowards need. We don't give a damn what you want us to call them. The problem is not how we identify your pacifiers, it's what those pieces of crap do. Cowards like yourself who hide behind clever, fictional names, need these weapons to make up for your inability to to have a spine. It is your substitute for actual guts. You are only as strong and brave as the weapon you hold. If someone ever did actually "take your guns away'" you would die from freight. If I were to say "Boo", AFCHIEF or another one of your sissies club would accuse me of trying to kill you.

Well said:

“… in precisely which “tactical” scenarios do all of these lunatics imagine that they’re going to use their matte-black, suppressor-fitted, flashlight-ready tactical weapons?” I think we have to talk about what I call the Red Dawn fantasy. Red Dawn of course refers to the very entertaining film in which The Wolverines, a bunch of kids from a rural western community, heroically engage a division of Cuban paratroopers and their Soviet advisors who invade the United States at the start of World War III. If you ask those who insist they must own one or more assault rifles and semi-automatic pistols with high capacity magazines, the answer you’ll hear over and over again is: I want to be ready to defend America against the Commies, the terrorists, the immigrant invaders, the United Nations, and yes, even the government of the United States of America. That’s the Red Dawn fantasy. It’s time we saw it for the paranoid delusion it is, and stop giving craziness the legitimacy of the Second Amendment. The gun debate shouldn’t be about whether we need armed guards in every school, movie theater, and place of worship. I shouldn’t be about hunting rifles or weapons for home or personal defense. Take the Red Dawn fantasy out of the equation, and we’ll have no problem coming up with a sensible gun policy in America. But as long as it persists, and as long as we let a delusional minority dictate the terms of the debate, we’re accepting more mass shootings as the price we have to pay.

Teufelhunden, well thought out and sensible comments!! That is exactly the way l feel as well. I also believe that the govt. is overreaching in many areas.

JD, many on here prefer to remain nameless. I have been sitting here thinking about this. My mother and siblings live in that area, and my mom and l disagree on many points about the govt. I would hate to put her in the position of having anyone bothering her over my opinions. Personally, l could care less what anyone on this planet thinks about my opinions, but in respect for my mother, l remain nameless.

Okay dudes! Dusty I take a print copy as not all of the interesting stuff gets onto the webpage. Now JimRussell it should be well known why I, among many, do not put a real name up there. I am a local fireman, well known in the county, and my chief may not necessarily agree with my political views or opinions. And I'll remind you that the First Amendment does not always apply to everyone equally. I'll also let you know that there are a pretty fair number of people in Emergency Services in Moore County that appreciate what I do. For the same reason that these people cannot feel free to post under their names...ain't gonna happen. As for being cowardly I'll simply remind you that YOU are NOT MAN ENOUGH to take me up on my offer. Guess that means you are happy being ill informed and don't want to change. A semi-auto rifle is a semi-auto rifle and like I said before... "why do I need one"? Because I'm a law abiding free American and I want one. That's reason enough, dude. Dusty, I'll apologize to you, I had read something quickly that didn't put the explain the full orders and hopes like you did. But is obumma still interested in re-instating a useless ban?? Oh, hell yes he is! And JimR...yes, obumma is, in my opinion, an anti-American piece of lying slime. Sorry you and Dusty seem to think he's the annointed one! I have no use for him and I'm simply hoping this great country can survive him.

WHOA!!! Jim, you know not of what you speak. First, I LOVED Bill Clinton. I wish he could run again, and again. Secondly, I do not "hide" behind anyone. I "respect" my mother and her annoniminty. I never liked Geo W. and l tried to give the current President every chance to do things like l had thought he should. He has never once done anything l actually approved of. Obviouslsy, he never has to do that, but nor do l ever have to vote for him. Also, l voted for Gary Johnson, but wanted Ron Paul for President. I think of anyone running, he had the closest thing to solutions that our country needs.

One more thing Jim, If you saw a person that went by their correct name on here, and they lost their job over it in these economic times, would you not consider that person a fool?? I would. Many of us on here are nearing retirement, and it could mean that person losing their retirement, how smart would that be?

There are a lot of people very concerned about assault weapons and high-capacity clips WHICH ARE VIRTUALLY THE SAME AS THE MACHINE GUNS. Of course machine guns were banned—just like assault weapons and high-capacity clips should be banned. I don't think anyone believes that we ought to bring machine guns back and have them available for American citizens to protect themselves, and I don’t think that assault weapons and high-capacity clips should be available to the public. Anyone who thinks they need such weapons is a potential problem. Personally, I'm concerned about the people who have been worked into frenzy and have become so delusional that they think any weapon manufactured for the military and law enforcement should be available to anyone who think the government is coming after them. Those are precisely the kind of people who should not be permitted to own any kind of weapon.
