STARworks Glass Offers Introduction to Glassblowing Course
If donning goggles while playing with fire and molten glass sounds like your idea of fun, you're in luck.
STARworks Glass is offering an Introduction to Glassblowing course beginning Jan. 31 through April 4. The eight-week class will meet at STARworks in Star every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., with the exception of Valentine's Day.
Students will work in STARworks' state-of-the-art glass lab, where they will learn the fundamentals of glassblowing.
"We've had a lot of people express interest in glassblowing classes," said STARworks Glass coordinator Nick Fruin. "Students will gain hands-on experience while learning the basics of the hot shop, and how to use the tools and equipment. Best of all, they will create simple glass objects, like paperweights, vessels and free-form sculptures, and they'll get to take them home."
Glassblowing expert Suzie Ririe will teach the course. Ririe earned her bachelor of fine arts in glassblowing at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2004. She has 12 years' experience in glassblowing and spent five years teaching introductory to advanced glassblowing classes at the Pittsburgh Glass Center.
Seats for the class are limited to nine people, and preregistration is required. The deadline to register is Jan. 25. The course fee is $325, due at registration.
