Thanks to Louise Milliken Howard for her accurate account of the origins of the Southern Pines Downtown Park. The details about the property transfers agree with what I have learned from family tradition.
A small correction. The name of the physician whose property (along with Hugh Betterly’s) formed the park was William Plummer Swett (my great-grandfather), not Sweat.
