If you had a terrorist running through your front yard looking for the next innocent person to kill, what would you like to have? Maybe a pea shooter? Maybe a BB gun? Maybe one of those guns you stick in a plastic pipe and you shoot a piece of potato at the bad person? I know that I would like to have the best automatic weapon I could buy.
I know by now you have probably heard the saying, “Guns don’t kill, people do.” Compare it to a car that a person can kill with. Be it the driver is drunk or just crazy, do we ban all cars, or just the fast ones?
It’s kind of ironic that at the school shootings they sent good men and women with big automatic weapons to the school to try to stop the bad people. Also, the president has good men and women protecting him with automatic weapons.
I would like to ask you if Obama can stop all the crazy nut cases, with a car, or a gun, or a bomb? Think about it.

How would you know whether he/she a terrorist or not? Would you expect them to be wearing a sign saying "I'm a terrorist!" They could just be kids playing hide & seek with your neighbors & happen to be running thru your yard. If you don't have any guns, etc, you could put up a sign in your yard saying "Terrorist Free Zone", that would keep them out.

Mr.Barnes, I'll make an assumption that you are a legal, responsible gun owner, well versed in both the safe operation of a firearm as well as being well trained in its use. Therefore, when the terrorist comes running through your yard looking for his next victim, I would think you would calmly go to your gun safe, pull out your shotgun, load the appropriate ammunition, walk to the front door and, after demanding that he (or she) leave your property, blow the SOB's head off. A semi-automatic weapon with an extended capacity ammunition magazine is not needed. My friend, skylinefirepest has already made it very clear to me that a shotgun can inflict far more damage than the weapon you think you need. You certainly don't need to riddle the terrorist with thirty rounds in 20 seconds to stop him. Just one blast from your favorite hunting shotgun will protect you and your family and property. Now as far as trying to keep crazy people from killing you with a gun or a car or a bomb, your only hope is to support legislation designed to identify and help people who would try to do this to you and to support legislation that limits their access to the tools that they might use to harm you. Maybe you can think about that.
Courseaire 4 months, 1 week ago
Ah, but what if there were 6 terroists and you had a really big yard, not a great shot & a little farsighted and had to shoot over a longer distance, you'd need more than a 1 shot shotgun. RPG or equivalent would be better.

"...a terrorist running through your front yard..."? Watching too much Faux News or science fiction, maybe playing too many video games as well? If Barnes sees someone that actually looks like he or she might be a "terrorist" in his front yard in this part of NC it's most likely one of the Ft. Bragg troops participating in their annual training/war games. Hope he doesn't shoot at them...they tend to become annoyed when shot at.

Courseaire, I suppose if Mr. Barnes was as paranoid as his letter suggests, he probably would have already booby trapped his front yard and built a moat around his house. Of course, if you want to play the "what if" game, what if he had as many shotguns as there were terrorists? What if he had double-barrelled shotguns, then he would only need half as many shotguns as there were terrorists. See, I can be just as silly as you.

Forget terrorists in my yard, I have my hatchet for when the zombies come. Both are equally likely.

You are absolutely correct that cars kill people and people kill people. Did you know that car accidents were the leading cause of accidental deaths up until 2008-2009? The reason why it is no longer in the leader of accidental deaths is due to laws like wear a seat belt, no drinking or driving, no texting while driving. Similarly, we could decrease gun violence through policies like background checks.
phstresident 4 months ago
JD is spot on. The zombie apocalypse is more likely than terrorists in our yards! I'm going to buy my crossbow now!

Old age kills more people than anything, let's outlaw that

Re: my comment "You are absolutely correct that cars kill people and people kill people." I meant cars do not kill people, but people kill people.

Unfortunately background checks can only go so far. Many times when people snap you read that they never had any prior trouble with the law, they were always a good neighbor yadda yadda. Just like people raising their precious pit bulls from puppyhood with lots of TLC- then they maul someone- never saw it coming. No one knows when seemingly normal people will snap. If they've never had issues before a background check will only go so far. Also the thugs we read about in the paper usually have a rap sheet like Santa's Christmas list and they still manage to get their guns.
Cracks me up that people think having committees for this and committees for that is doing something. "Let's conduct a study" is just red tape-politician speak for let's pacify the masses. Hilarious. I just roll my eyes because we have plenty of laws we don't enforce then our politicians create committees and crap to have some "dialogue" about what they can possibly do (you've got to be kidding). Our government is its own worst enemy sometimes. Our so called leaders are like friggin keystone cops. Goofy as crap. Make laws and don't enforce them then let criminals back out in the street. Like stoopid dogs chasing their tails-pretty much the whole lot of 'em. Geez!

Someone on the left, anyone, please address fast & furious and why it just "went away" like Libya. I mean doesn't that disgust y'all too?
teufelhunden 4 months ago
The government has more coverups than 300 pound Aunt Hattie at the beach on the Fourth of July...and y'all seem to trust and adore these clowns? Yikes. I think that's part of the problem these days: folks that blindly trust hook line and sinker. At least we have folks that want to question our "leaders" and hold them accountable. This is our country too, Washington. They have this mafia like untouchable attitude that is utterly shameful. Okay...going out to dinner now and having me a nice glass of wine...
Courseaire 4 months ago
I sorry teuf, but I was at that beach & aunt Hattie was in a topless thong. We needed an assault rifle for that

I too, am curious about Fast and Furious. It just melted away. Our govt. can sell/give away assault rifles to criminals and that is OK? Give them away, and then lose track of them? That is OK?
JD 4 months ago
Might help if we had an ATF director at the time to, you know, supervise and coordinate such things so it doesn't screw up like Fast & Furious. Seriously it's been two presidents since we had one? Should we not have somebody directing the department that regulates alcohol, tobacco, and firearms?
Yukonjohn 4 months ago
Unfund and disband the ATF. It has been a messed-up dept. ever since it was started.
Thatcher 4 months ago
Yukon! Man, you just missed the best homemade crabcakes ever...my wife is amazing! Just finished with dinner. I agree we should disband the ATF. Too many other departments can handle that. By the way, having not had the time tonight to read all the posts here, what is a "Sandy Hook truther?" Seems some here are asking me if I am one, and I'm not reading a gazillion posts to find out what one is. Tell me it's not the crazy guy from England that I pointed out 2 days ago...he was just a conspiracy guy, not (?) a truther...or are they the same? Cheers my friend, and it is almost freezing here...you would like it!
Yukonjohn 4 months ago
Hey Thatcher, my Friend. From what l can gather, a truther is soneone that either thinks that Sandy Hook never happened, was staged by actors, or was a product of the govt. doing it so they can get guns off the street. I am not sure what to think. l do not believe you fall into any of these categories, but would not put words into your mouth. I hope you were up to see that snow last night. We had a flurry or two, then cleared and right promptly to 30 below. Hopefully it will warm up tomorrow like they say. Zero looks beautiful when it is 30+ below!!
JD 4 months ago
And the bromance continues.
Yukon the ATF is rolled underneath the umbrella of Homeland Security so no chance in disbanding it. Might as well work to improve and a director would help. A headless organization is useless and it was made that way by inept politicians.
Also Thatcher I know you have been avoiding me since I called you out on not having evidence of me being DR or disparaging your wife. But a truther is someone like Pack who, like Yukon said, thinks Sandy Hook was staged and harass a kind man that gave shelter to children. It's disgusting.

Head inept politician = Potus.
JD 4 months ago
Yep Courseaire the current and last President have been inept in convincing the congress to appoint one. Obama and Bush have been weak on getting that position filled competently.

Those darn terrorists, always making their way across my front lawn, they've almost worn a pathway. C'mon, how many terrorists do you see everyday. I've lived a lifetime (Almost) and I've yet to see one around my grass patch. Admitedly, if I do I'd most probably do my beat Clint Eastwood and say "Git orf of my lawn". That'd show em!

Yukon! Just finished watching Ice Age lV with my daughter and my wife...dang man! That looks like parts of Alaska! Sandy Hook staged by actors? Such a claim is more than stupid...it is cruel and inhumane, especially for the parents who lost little kids. I have not had the chance to go back through these posts and find out what it means, but I have a hard time believing that anyone would claim this was staged by actors. Please direct me to a post here by hour/time ago so I can see what they said. I work during the day, and never get online, so I usually only read the last few posts on any given thread when I get home at night...(and then I watch Ice Age IV, and then Snow Dogs...Yukon, I should have never told my daughter about Alaska). Having not read all the posts above, I'm not even sure why I'm being asked if I believe that Sandy Hook was only actors. So there is no confusion about what I believe: many children not much younger than my daughter were murdered there, with their teachers. It was real. There were no actors.

greatbrit, here in the colonies, we must always have something to be afraid of. It's how our economy operates. First, we need something off shore to be afraid of so we can build a large military, employ lots of soldiers and weaponry and create lots of support jobs. Then we need something domestically to be afraid of. The current fear being used is loss of our guns. We fear that our government will take away all of our guns so they can then take away all our other rights and freedoms. The reason given is so that our current president can destroy the country he was elected to lead. When anyone questions why he would want to do that, they are told to shut up and just be afraid. As a result, the manufacture and sale of guns and ammunition has gone through the roof, providing jobs for those promoting the fear. In Moore County, there are a lot of retired business executives as well as retired military and the terrorist running through your yard scenario or the dreams of terrorist attacking Fort Bragg scenario is just a little fun game these folks like to play to keep the rest stirred up and afraid.

Jim, I was sorely afraid that President Bush was going to say "This current situation with worldwide terrorism is so complex, and l am the only one that has been briefed throughly enough to handle the situation and our country, so l am suspending elections". I was honestly expecting this. I am surprised it did not happen, although since he has been gone, and has said nothing, maybe he was ready to give it up anyway. I am also scared of the way the current President is stearing the country. Installing fear into the populace, then telling them this is what he needs to do to fix the problem. I honestly believe that he could do the same things that President Lincoln did ....ref. NDAA. If this is not scarey to Americans, l do not know what it would take to scare you. I can stare down a grizzly bear, but this does terrify me.
ProudYankee 4 months ago
Mr. Barnes, i am glad I live in Lee County, where we don't have terrorists running about in our yards.
JimRussell44 4 months ago
Yukonjohn, I'm not completly following your train of thought on what is terrifying you. Could you elaborate?
Yukonjohn 4 months ago
NDAA terrifies me Jim. The fact that our country can "hold" its own citizens for an undetermined period of time without a trial is as frightening as it comes. They do not need a reason, just say you are a "threat" to America. Does NDAA not scare you? I guess if you are with the party in power, it is OK, but seeing how so far, we change parties in power, it doesnt matter what side of the fence you are on, at some time, you are going to be in the minority. And, if like myself, not being with the Repubs or the Dems, l am afraid of both of them. We are having problems even here with our Republican party. The state chairmanship and vice chair went to huge Ron Paul supporters, and now the Republican party is not wanting to seat them. The Republicans had better wake up.. They are pitiful as it is, and are losing support in droves.

Sure are a lot of paranoid people around here. Quite scary, and that's who I'm AFRAID of. Fast and Furious? Yes it's not a great idea to sell/give guns to Drug Gangs just like it wasn't such a great idea to sell arms to IRAN back in the 80's like the Reagan Admin did. It also wasn't a great idea to have the CIA "train" OBL. Why am I not mad about F&F? Well, that is just the thing. It's a very BIG BAD WORLD out there and how do we "Manage it?" We shouldn't have to manage it but after WWII we got the job and the American People just haven't DEMANDED in strong enough terms since Vietnam for us to STOP IT! Yes, Yukonjohn it's very bad to think that Americans can be "held" indefinately. Getting a good lawyer is about the only way out I guess. Oh, I'm also still mad about IRAQ, the lives and money lost. F&F is nothing compared to that. Do all of you really believe that our President is actually allowed to be totally INDEPENDENT with their plans, ideas, and actions? Isn't it more likely that the CIA, NSA, and the Pentagon pull the winner of the Presidental election into a "Secret Meeting" right after and gives Him/Her the "Playbook?" That's more the way it probably really goes. Most of us can only then wait for the "Scraps" to be doled out to us after we spend our lives working hard and paying taxes to a government that doesn't always spend them wisely.

Hey MC7, hope you are having a fantastic weekend, same to you clarabelle!!
With what you are saying, you seem to agree with almost all the pillars of Ron Paul's campaign. He was the only candidate that felt these same ways. By the way, l strongly opposed lran/Contra, and the war in lraq, but oddly enough, no one came and asked me what l thought or if l even gave a damn one way or the other.
ln ref. to NDAA, no American should have to "get a really good lawyer" to get themselves out of trouble for living their otherwise law abiding life!! We are slowly, well maybe not even slowly, eroding our freedoms...now in leaps and bounds!!

people need to realize that there is a big difference between assault weapons, and a gun that can be used to protect yourself. if you need some automatic weapon, then guess what, you're intentions are not good. having the right to defend yourself, does not mean having the right to kill tons of people at once.
moonchild7 4 months ago
It's a beautiful weekend here Yukonjohn and will be heading up to the Big Apple next week. These days a person needs a "good lawyer" just for traffic tickets (luckily though I've never had one by the way) so when or if you're hauled in for anythiong more serious a lawyer is definately needed. But I also know that the old saying of, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse" is still a very good one, So believe it or not, I go every now and then to the library to read Reference Law Books and such. I want to stay as "Knowledgable" as I can.

Mr. Barnes, your silly letter doesn't even deserve a reply. The weak, car thing, etc. is so lame. Why don't you run over the "terrorist" with your car then? How would you know they were a "terrorist"? What paranoia! If this is the level of intelligence supporting the resistance against any type of gun control, no wonder most are considered nut cases. I guess you approve of the NRA ad using the children of the President as fodder for more of their panic provoking propaganda. Too bad Obama asked for armed guards for the schools, BEFORE the stupid ad hit the air waves, making the NRA look even worse than usual. As for your last line, the word "think" is obviously alien to you. Maybe you should stop and "think" before you write this kind of ridiculous letter to the editor.
