Organizers Plan Gun Rally
In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shootings and a call for stricter gun controls, residents in Moore County will rally this weekend to support their right to bear arms.
District Court Judge Rob Wilkins and state Sen. Jerry Tillman are among the scheduled speakers at the Sandhills Second Amendment and Constitution Rally, according to organizers.
The rally will be held Saturday in the grass lot beside Ed's Gun Shop, 5560 U.S. 1, Vass. The rally is free and open to the public. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. with the program to start at 11 a.m.
"This is a rally in support of the Second Amendment " said Mary Ann Manning, one of the event's organizers. "It's about more than just guns, it's about our rights."
Manning and her husband, Rick, were among six local residents who organized the rally after Rick Manning heard calls on the radio for a national rally to be held Saturday at all the state capitals.
"It came together rather quickly around our dining room table," Mary Ann Manning said of the plan to hold the event.
Supporters of the Second Amendment have called for individuals to participate in a "Guns Across America" rally at noon Saturday at state capitals. Organizers of those events are calling for a "peaceful picketing protest against any and all future gun legislation."
The local rally will offer information about the meaning and importance of the Second Amendment and offer their view on the impact gun control could have, Mary Ann Manning said.
In addition to Wilkins, speakers are expected to include other politicians and Moore County law enforcement agencies. Up-to-date information about proposed gun control measures will be provided, as well as who to contact to voice opinions. Those attending may also sign petitions opposing gun control measures.
According Ken Benway, another event organizer, the rally is an effort to inform local citizens about the truth behind proposed gun control measures.
"Gun control has been a leading news story since the Sandy Hook school shootings in December, yet there is a lot of misinformation out there about both the need for and the true impact of gun control measures. Through this rally, we hope to dispel some of the myths and get people thinking about the underlying causes and real solutions to violent events such as Sandy Hook."
