The Southern Pines Civic Club announces a Valentine Card Party Luncheon Saturday, Feb. 9, at noon, at the Club House.

Proceeds from the $20 per person charge will benefit the club's Preservation Fund.

Tea party games have been part of the club's history since its inception in 1907, when the ladies, led by Helen Boyd Dull, needed funds for beautifying the town, purchasing the first fire engine, books for the library, sanitation equipment, building the current clubhouse designed by Alfred B. Yeomans in 1925, and more recently furnishing equipment for the town playground.

Preserving and maintaining the clubhouse, a designated National Historic Landmark, is a primary club project. The gardens, established in memory of Dull by her sister, Mary Boyd McCormack, are also a primary project for the club, with updating the brick paths, railings, plantings and general maintenance.

The event committee has planned a themed Valentine's party to include door prizes, table favors, bridge, mah-jongg, Scrabble, or board games of choice.

Jill Bonacci, club chef, promises a delicious luncheon for those attending, according to a spokesman.

For reservations, call Blanche Woodruff at (910) 695-1023. Checks should be sent to Carol Misegades at 126 Triple Crown Circle, Southern Pines NC 28387 by Feb. 1, payable to Southern Pines Civic Club.
