Birdies and Bogeys

Birdies: By Walker and Katie Morris, of Southern Pines, for the distinction of being chosen as the first couple to receive the United Way of Moore County's Cornerstone Award. In the past, this designation has always gone to one person.

Though the long list of volunteer and leadership activities for each of the recipients is way too long even to summarize here, both have served for years as exemplars of community service. Suffice it to say that this is a richly deserved honor.

Eagles: By two sets of Southern Pines brothers - Elliott and Graham Leonard, and Graham and Hunter Hawes - who received Eagle badges Saturday in a ceremony at First Baptist Church.

After diligent efforts that spanned years, both pairs of brothers earned certification for this prestigious Scouting honor last year, which happened to be the centennial year of the Eagle rank.

"Continue that great adventure as you move forward,"Assistant Scoutmaster Alan Melvin told them after reading the Eagle Charge. And we're certain they'll do just that. Congratulations to all of these fine young men.
