SCC Announces Career Training Classes

Continuing Education Career Training courses at Sandhills Community College run the gamut from aviation to camp counselor training.

Following are the courses that begin in March and April.

Events Planning

A new course, Special Events Planning, will teach the ins and outs of event planning from a seasoned event-planning expert, Leigh Baggs.

Baggs has 32 years of experience in events planning. Topics will include event and meeting design and objectives, program planning, food and beverage catering, and vendors and other resources and organizations available to assist with coordination of major events.

This course will also provide information for students beginning their own commercial business in planning special events, such as weddings or conferences.

The class will meet on Thursdays from April 4-May 9 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Aberdeen Recreation Station. The cost is $70 ($5 if age 65-plus).

Notary Public

A notary public is officially authorized to witness signatures on legal documents, collect sworn statements and administer oaths. Participants must have a high school diploma or GED and no felony convictions. A Notary Public class will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, April 2 and 4, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $70 ($5 if age 65-plus).

Health Care

A new course, Home Care Nurse Aide - Level 1, will provide advanced training in person-centered care, delivered in a home-care setting. Completers are eligible for listing as a home care nurse aide with the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry.

The prerequisite is Nurse Aid Level 1 Registry. Instructor Molly Wilson will teach March 4-April 29 on Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at A21 Pine Knoll, St. Joseph of the Pines. The cost is $180 ($5 if age 65-plus).

Food Service

ServSafe Food Safety and Sanitation teaches the basics of food handling safety and facility sanitation requirements. This course is recommended for all food service facilities, including supervisory personnel, culinary professionals and food service staff. Instructor Megan Coleman will teach on Mondays and Tuesdays, March 11-19, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The cost is $90.

Camp Counselor Training

Another new course, Camp Counselor in Training, will help participants gain the skills and experience necessary to act as a role model, resolve conflicts, manage time and resources, maintain safety and, plan and lead recreational activities.

This 12-hour course includes CPR/AED certification. Leigh Baggs will teach on Saturdays from April 6-27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Aberdeen Recreation Station. The cost is $70 ($5 if age 65-plus)

Aviation

Private and Sport Pilot Ground School will teach the basic elements of flying, including the theory of flight systems, communication, navigation, weather and FAA regulations.

Successful completion of this course prepares students to sit for the FAA written examination. Instructor John McRae, CFII, ATP will teach this course on Saturdays from March 9-May 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Moore County Airport. The cost is $180, plus text and supplies.

Landscaping

What Landscapers Need to Know for Spring will help students understand the basics of site preparation, planting techniques, lawn establishment and care, pruning, irrigation and water needs, and fertilization.

Instructor James Matthews will teach on Tuesdays, March 5-April 30, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $70 ($5 if age 65-plus).

Automotive Technologies

Successful completion of Auto Safety Inspection will certify students to inspect motor vehicles under the N.C. Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. A valid driver's license is required.

Instructor Tom Bergman will teach on Monday and Tuesday, March 11 and 12, from 6 to 10 p.m. Another class will be offered on Monday and Tuesday, April 15-16 from 6 to 10 p.m. The cost is $70 ($5 if age 65-plus)

Successful completion of OBD Emissions Control Inspection will certify students to inspect motor vehicles under the N.C. Motor Vehicles OBD Emissions Control Inspection Law. The prerequisite is Auto Safety Inspection.

Instructor Jimmy Black will offer this course on Wednesday and Thursday, March 13 and 14, from 6 to 10 p.m. and again on Wednesday and Thursday, April 17 and 18, at the same time. The cost is $70 ($5 if age 65-plus).

OBD Emissions Control

Inspection will recertify current OBD emissions control inspectors upon successful completion.

Jimmy Black will teach on Wednesday, March 20, from 6 to 10 p.m. This will also be offered on Wednesday, April 24, from 6 to 10 p.m. The cost will be $70 ($5 if age 65-plus).

Vehicle Dealers' Continuing Education is required of all non-franchise vehicle dealers in NC. This course will include updates of N.C. general statutes and DMV policies and procedures.

Instructor Mark Ivey will offer this course on Thursday, March 7, at the Sandhills Hoke Center in Raeford, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be offered on the Pinehurst campus on Thursday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $70 ($5 if age 65-plus).
