Patriots Send Seven Wrestlers to States

Seven Pinecrest High School wrestlers advanced to the state 4-A individual wrestling championships while the Patriots as a team finished second in the Eastern 4-A Regional held Saturday at Cape Fear High School.
The Patriots had 135.5 points in finishing second to Jack Britt, with 232.5 points, in the regional that boasted 27 teams competing.
Dallas Roemer and Irvin Enriquez claimed regional championships for the Patriots, while Mario Contreras and Rider Excell earned runner-up spots. Jonah Caliri, Ryan McGuire and Luke Fetla all had fourth-place finishes for the Patriots. The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the state championships that start Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Currently ranked No. 6 at 120 in the 4-A division, sophomore Enriquez (39-2) pinned Dakota Scott of Purnell Swett at 1:08 and Raheem Simmons of West Johnson in 22 seconds before winning a 20-5 tech fall over South View’s Tristan Strother. He claimed the regional championship by earning a 9-0 major decision over Garrett Hinton of Jack Britt in the finals.
Roemer (a junior with a 43-2 record), currently ranked No. 2 at 138 in the 4-A division, pinned Amir Shakir of Hoke in 53 seconds and James Mauldin of South View in 32 seconds before taking a 17-2 tech fall over Jack Britt’s Michael Palmer. He claimed the regional title with a 5-1 decision over Pa Sanneh of New Bern in the finals.
Patriot senior Contreras (32-8), wrestling at 145, pinned Jamahl Williams of Seventy First in 1:59 and Nicholas Griffin of Cape Fear in 3:42, then won a 6-2 decision over East Wake’s Daniel Killette. He fell in the finals to Eric Milks of New Bern to earn his second-place finish.
Currently ranked No. 4 in the 160 weight class, junior Excell (36-9) pinned Warren Frey of West Johnson at 2:51, beat Joe Stevenson of Jack Britt with a 6-0 decision before pinning Paris Artis of South View, ranked No. 3 at 160, at 3:55. His roll through the regionals ended in the finals when he lost to Adrian Soto-Perez, ranked No. 2 in the 160 weight class.
Caliri (31-7), currently ranked No. 9 at 170 advanced to the consolation finals where he placed fourth with a loss to Marcell Burns of Laney, ranked No. 6 at 170. McGuire (36-10) advanced to the consolation finals where he placed 4th with a loss to Dejon McLean of Hoke, ranked No. 7 at 182.
Currently ranked No. 1 in the 220 weight class, Luke Fetla (34-2) finished fourth when he lost to fifth-ranked Jacob Roberson of Jack Britt in the consolation finals.
