The Rooster's Wife celebrates the latest recording of Piedmont blues artist Jon Shain, Sunday, Feb. 24, at the weekly gathering in the listening room of Poplar Knight Spot.

Sunday evening concerts begin at 6:45 p.m., with the doors opening at 6 p.m. for general admission seating.

The 100-seat listening room at the corner of Knight and Poplar in downtown Aberdeen features acoustic music of all genres.

Shows continue this winter through March 24, on consecutive Sundays, with two additional shows, March 21 and 22, for the Palustris Festival.

Over the years Jon Shain has developed and refined his own contemporary version of the Piedmont blues, a bouncy, energetic style that developed in Shain's adopted hometown of Durham, and elsewhere around the region.

On "Ordinary Cats," his eighth solo album, Shain doesn't abandon that sensibility completely, but he does plug it in and crank it up.

"I knew I would be playing some electric guitar on this record," he says. "I haven't put a lot of electric guitar on my albums. I've played it on other people's albums more than my own."

The result is a modern revisiting of the roots-rock sound associated with Stephen Stills and Neil Young, at times. But there is still a generous amount of finger-picked acoustic guitar from Shain, a former International Blues Challenge finalist in the solo/duo category.

Shain's longtime musical collaborator, FJ Ventre, co-produced and engineered "Ordinary Cats," as well as playing bass and providing backing vocals.

Lizzy Ross will open and join the band for their set, as she features prominently on the record.

The Rooster's Wife is a community arts organization dedicated to bringing the best in live music to the Sandhills.

Home base is the gallery room of Poplar Knight Spot, 114 Knight St. in downtown Aberdeen, two blocks east of U.S. 1. Medical outreach and school programs occur regularly offsite. Frequently, musicians are available for private instruction and workshops.
