Civil War Round Table
The Rufus Barringer Civil War Roundtable meets Thursday Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Southern Pines Civic Club, located at Ashe Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, behind the tennis courts.
The speaker is Col. "Black Jack" Travis, who is an author, historian and American Civil War re-enactor. He has a degree in business administration and is the owner of Action Orthopedics in Raleigh.
Travis has written articles in national publications, and will present "The Life and Times of Confederate States General E. P. Alexander," with emphasis on his actions at Gettysburg, Pa., in July 1863.

MOCARS
The Moore County Amateur Radio Society (MOCARS) meeting is Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Moore County Health Department, 705 Pinehurst Ave, Carthage.
The meeting is open to everyone with an interest in amateur radio. The primary focus of the meeting will be on finalizing the club's activity schedule for 2013 and a wrapup of the successful support for the recent Uwharrie Mountain Run.
MOCARS holds periodic courses for FCC licensing and conducts licensing examinations on the third Saturday of odd months. Contact Charles Wackerman at (910) 947-2707 for details. MOCARS also hosts 2-meter nets at 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays at 147.240MHz + 600MHz offset +91.5HMz tone and a 6-meter net on Mondays at 7 p.m. on 53.150MHz - 1Mhz offset, no tone. All licensed amateurs are welcome to participate in meetings and nets.

Chess Club
The Sandhills Chess Club meets at the Moore County Senior Center (U.S. 15-501, two miles north of the Pinehurst Traffic Circle) Tuesdays at 2:45 p.m. and Thursdays at 7 p.m.
