The Union Pines boys’ basketball team closed out its regular season Thursday in Fayetteville with a 98-55 league loss to the Westover Wolverines.
With the 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference loss Union Pines (5-19 overall) finished with a record of 1-11 in league play.
The Wolverines (19-4) clinched the regular-season CFVC championship for a second straight season closing with a conference mark of 11-1 with the senior night win.
Westover opened up a 30-18 lead through one quarter of action behind the hot hand of senior shooting guard Titus Gary.
Gary sank four treys in the period, while point guard Eddie Jackson scored three buckets in transition and sank two free throws.
By halftime Westover led 58-28. The Wolverines forced 14 Union Pines turnovers in the first half, connected from downtown eight times and slammed home five dunks.
Leading all scorers at the break was Gary with 17 points. Jackson closed the opening half with 16 points, four steals, four assists and three thunderous slams.
Senior captain Matthew Maness banged in four three-point field goals to lead the Vikings at intermission with 13 points.
As the second half commenced Union Pines cut back on the turnovers but it could do little to cut into the Wolverine lead.
On the night Westover finished 15-of-24 from behind the three-point line for a percentage of 62.5 from downtown. Overall the Wolverines closed the game with a shooting percentage of 62.7 and tallied eight dunks.
Union Pines went eight-for-18 from downtown (44.4 percent) and shot 43.3 percent overall in the tilt. The Vikings were outrebounded by a margin of 33-24 and had 10 assists against 19 turnovers.
Conversely Westover tallied 27 assists against 14 turnovers.

As the regular-season champion, Westover receives an opening-round bye in the CFVC tournament that begins Tuesday.
The Wolverines will play the winner of Tuesday’s No.4-No.5 game — featuring fourth-place Douglas Byrd (6-6, 9-14 CFVC ) and fifth-place Gray’s Creek (4-8, 9-14) Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Douglas Byrd in Fayetteville — on their home floor in the second of two semifinal tilts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Other opening-round games feature the second-seed Southern Lee Cavaliers (13-9, 10-2) versus seventh-seeded Western Harnett (2-21, 1-11) in Sanford on Monday at 7:30 p.m. and the third-seeded Overhills Jaguars (16-8, 9-3) against sixth-seed Union Pines in Spring Lake Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Vikings were awarded the sixth seed in the tournament because of a nonconference head-to head 69-66 victory over Western Harnett back in December during the Lee County Holiday Classic.
