Vikings Take Conference Wrestling Crown

Union Pines rode six individual championship performances Saturday to claim the Cape Fear Valley Conference wrestling tournament.

Union Pines, the host school for the tournament, eked out a close win over runner-up Gray’s Creek, piling up 176.5 points to the Bears’ 172. Overhills was a distant third-place finisher with 112 points.

Dylan Barber, Paul Ambrose, Samuel Bartram, Ryan Hull, Connor Van Cleave and Ian Burch all won individual titles for the Vikings.

Barber claimed first at 106 pounds with a pin in 14 seconds over Gleeson Brown of Overhills. Paul Ambrose claimed his title at 120 pounds with a pin in 1:22 against Timothy Boatwright of Overhills.

Bartram took a 14-4 major decision over Mathew Metzel of Overhills to take the championship at 126 pounds. Ryan Hull won a 9-4 decision over Nathan Zak of Western Harnett to take the crown at 132 pounds.

Connor Van Cleave pinned Cedric Young of Gray’s Creek in 2:38 to claim the individual title at 145 pounds. Ian Burch rounded out the Vikings championship wrestlers when he pinned R’quan Mack of Overhills in 4:56.

Viking Mike Fedowitz just missed out on an individual title when he dropped a close 4-3 decision to Brenna Patton of Western Harnett at 113 pounds.

Justin Windle had a third-place finish for the Vikes by winning the consolation final at 195 pounds. He pinned Ben Long of Southern Lee in 35 seconds to finish third.

Dylan Duncan (152 pounds), Zach Yates (170), Grant Jefferson (182) and Caleb Edwards (285) all had fourth-place finishes for the Vikings.

Tim Squires (138) and Garrett Jefferson (220) claimed fifth-place finishes for the Vikings.

Union Pines was scheduled to participate in the state 3-A dual team playoffs on Tuesday. The first two rounds of the playoffs were held at Union Pines.
