Jennie Cunningham of Pinecrest won her third state title in a row in the 1,000-meter run at Saturday’s NCHSAA State Indoor Championship held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
The Patriot senior finished about four seconds ahead of second-place Kaylie Loyd of Southeast Raleigh with a time of 2:57.46. That was less than a second off the all-time record in the event of 2:56.7 set by Becca Deloache of Myers Park in 2010.
The Patriot girls finished eighth in the team competition won by Wakefield. Also earning points for the Patriots were seniors Hannah Hensley and Janea Williams in the high jump.
Hensley took second place in the event for the third time with a jump of 5-foot-4. She cleared the same height as the winner, but was awarded second place because she had more misses. Her other runner-up finishes were in 2010 and 2012. She came in fourth in 2011. Williams was fourth with a jump of 5-02.
Also for the Patriot girls, senior Kelsey Rea earned a top-10 finish, coming in 10th in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:21.
Knightdale was the team champion in the boys’ competition. Seniors Becket Killam and Jay Harris placed for Pinecrest. Killam was sixth in the 1,000 with a time of 2:38.6. Harris tied for seventh in the pole vault with a leap of 12-0.
