For the first time since 1994, a Hall of Fame will be able to call Pinehurst “home.”
Housed within the Given Memorial Library in the Village of Pinehurst, the Pinehurst Hall of Fame will not just be a “Golf Hall of Fame.” Its purpose is to create a conduit to publicly recognize individuals, past and present, who have contributed to the historical development of the Village of Pinehurst, the Pinehurst Resort and the surrounding community.
“The Pinehurst Hall of Fame and its associated programs will focus on the rich history and tradition that our community has and will preserve this history,” said Patrick Corso, Board President for the Given Memorial Library. “The establishment of the Hall of Fame will tie in nicely with the planned enhancements and expansions of the library and archives for the future.”
The Hall of Fame will have an independent selection committee that will meet annually to discuss, nominate and elect the yearly inductees. The committee is comprised of members, consisting of the Executive Director of the Library and three library/archive board members, four Pinehurst community-at-large members, and independent members, who have been selected by the library’s Board of Directors.
An annual induction ceremony will be held to recognize the current year’s elected inductees. The ceremony will serve as one of several fundraising opportunities each year for the Given Memorial Library and Tufts Archives.
"We are thrilled about our plans for the future,” stated Audrey Moriarty, Executive Director of the Given Memorial Library and Tufts Archives. “The library has been serving the community for nearly fifty years, and we are excited about the future expansion plans for both the library and Tuft’s Archives.
“We would love to have space to honor more people who have made a great difference in the Village of Pinehurst. The Pinehurst Hall of Fame will be just such a site, and will not only raise awareness of our leaders, past and present, but will create fundraising opportunities to expand our programs and services for the community."
The Pinehurst Hall of Fame election criteria will be developed by the Selection Committee and approved by the Board of Directors. The selection/election standards will consist of three “tracks” to annually elect the inductees for the Hall of Fame: “Pre-Modern”(1895-1976), which will be no more than 60% of the annual ballot; “Modern” (1976-Present), no more than 40% of the ballot; and a “Special Merit” category, which is for those potential inductees that have been significantly influenced by Pinehurst and the surrounding community and for special recognition opportunities for individuals that do not qualify for the primary election criteria “tracks.”
Additionally, an annual Pinehurst Hall of Fame Golf Tournament will be held on the day of the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to raise additional monies for the perpetuation of the Library and Archives. The tournament will be played on Pinehurst No. 2 and is scheduled for Saturday, November 30, 2013. The annual Pinehurst Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on the same day.

This explains why the current council is building Parking Deck Pyramids and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon on the Village Green.

Mrs Cleveland should be the first inductee. Had it not been for her philanthropy, perhaps many citizens would have passed away in the absence of a rescue vehicle.
