The Sandhills Community College Flyers basketball team scored big this past weekend when it was featured prominently in the state's two largest newspapers: The News & Observer of Raleigh and The Charlotte Observer.

Noted sports writer Scott Fowler did a lengthy article on the team's uphill climb these past few years and the national title the team won last year.

"When you think of college basketball in North Carolina," Fowler writes, "you think first of the ACC. Famous coaches. future NBA stars. Packed arenas. ESPN telecasts. National championships.

"You won't see a bit of that at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst -- except for the 'national championship' part."

Here in Southern Pines, we’re all proud of Sandhills Community College (SCC) and its national champion basketball team .

I am also proud that my grandmother (Ms. Allen) moved here to Southern Pines fifty years ago, when SCC was first getting started, to become one of the college’s first instructors. Since my parents met here in Southern Pines shortly thereafter, you could say I would never have been born if not for SCC.

As a graduate of Southern Pines’ O’Neal School, which is across the street from SCC, I am proud that they provide a gym for their SCC neighbors to play in.

I know Dr. Dempsey- SCC president and Southern Pines resident- is very proud of his school.

I am proud of Sandhills’ history and its many facets of excellence but I am also proud that it began in and is still located in Southern Pines. While the article states at least three times that SCC is located in Pinehurst, it is located entirely within Southern Pines’ municipal limits- literally by a mile from our neighbors in Pinehurst.

I never could understand how SCC ended up in Pinehurst ... it seems no one else knows.

Kudos to the Sandhills Team ... they represent the Sandhills area well.

Toda,

SCC has a Pinehurst mailing address, but is in SP. The Mayor of Southern Pines, who lives near SCC, has a Pinehurst address. The new Harris Teeter on airport Rd is in SP but has a Carthage mailing address (most people think it is in Whispering Pines). I have a friend who lives in Aberdeen but has an SP mailing address. One's mailing address is the post office that delivers there, not necessarily where they are located.

Chris ~ proverbial smoke and mirrors. The Pinehurst Auto Group ~ Beaver and Hollifield doesn't have one store in Pinehurst....
