An exhibit of West African art, on loan from the Angstreich family of Southern Pines, will be on display in the Hastings Gallery of Art in Boyd Library on the Sandhills Community College campus beginning Feb. 12.

There will be an opening reception Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the gallery.

"The public is warmly invited to attend," says a spokesman.

The exhibit will include nearly three dozen pieces of African art, collected over a decade while Michael Angstreich, of Oslo, Norway, was living and working in West Africa with the Peace Corps, CARE and other agricultural development programs.

The collection includes carvings, sculpture, ceremonial masks - as well as everyday items like cooking utensils and children's toys. Artifacts from Liberia, Nigeria, Mali and Sierra Leone will be on display.

Admission to the Hastings Gallery is free and open to the public during regular library hours, Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
