Sports Briefs: FCA Presents Motivational Speaker Tonight

Nationally-known motivational speaker Jay Koopman will be featured at tonight’s (Wednesday) program “A Night of Champions,” held at Grace Church in Southern Pines.

All children and adults are welcome to the free event presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Free pizza will be served from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. when the program begins.

Thompson Leads Pats in Golf

Junior Savannah Thompson earned medalist honors with a round of 75 as the Pinecrest girls won their third Southeastern Conference golf match in a row at Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton Monday afternoon.

The Patriot team score of 335 also included a 77 by Gabby Weiss, an 89 by Haley Robinson and a 94 by Catherine Cirigliano.

Among the other low scores were 84s by Megan Munroe of Hoke County and Meredith Godwin of Purnell Swett, and an 85 by Ashley Barringer of Scotland High.

The other team scores were Scotland, 366, Hoke and Purnell Swett, 408, and Richmond Senior, 429.

Scotland will host the conference match next Monday at Scotch Meadows.

Viking Girls Win in Tennis

The Union Pines girls’ tennis team picked up a 9-0 conference win at Southern Lee Monday.

Madi Kramer won twice for the Vikings, improving her career record at the school to 93-12.

She is currently ranked No. 30 on the school’s career win-list.

Union Pines is now 10-0 in the Cape Fear Valley Conference and 13-0 overall.

Next up is another conference matchup when Western Harnett comes to Cameron today (Wednesday).

Patriots Post Win in Volleyball

The Pinecrest volleyball team improved to 15-1 overall and 4-1 in the Southeastern Conference with a 25-17, 25-11 and 25-16 home victory over Hoke County on Thursday.

Felicia Painter had 10 kills and 14 service points for the Patriots. Mary Grace Phipps added nine kills and 10 service points.

Olivia McKinney contributed seven kills and seven service points, and Keegan Lynch was credited with 13 digs for the Pinecrest team.

A Monday match with Middle Creek was postponed. The Patriots return to action today with a nonconference match at Western Harnett.

Pinecrest Freshmen Win

The Pinecrest freshman football team (4-1) scored early and often in Thursday’s 33-0 victory over Hoke County in Raeford.

The Patriots turned two long first-quarter drives into a 14-0 lead. Quarterback Christian Ledbetter scored the first touchdown on a 20-yard run.

Running back Crash Burns took it in from the six for the other, and kicker Kyle Corbett converted both times.

About a 40-yard pass from Ledbetter to Mishak McCrae in the second period set up another touchdown run by the Patriot quarterback.

Corbett again kicked the extra point.

A scoring run of 10 yards by Maleek Stanford before the intermission made it 27-0.

The final points of the game came on about a 30-yard interception return by Ayinde McKnight.

It was his second interception of the game. Brandon Reeves also picked off a Buck pass for the Patriots.

This coming Thursday the Patriots will entertain Scotland High for the second time this season. The Pats were 27-2 victors in the first meeting.
