Trombonist Turre Coming to Temple Theatre

The Heart of Carolina Jazz Society presents international trombone star Steve Turre, in concert with The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, Friday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m., at the Temple Theatre in Sanford.

Turre is a two-time winner of an NEA grant for composition/performance. He is a professor of jazz trombone at the Juilliard School of Music, has won both the Downbeat Critic & Readers Poll more than anyone else except the great J.J. Johnson, is a multiple winner of Jazz Times and Jazziz polls, and has been in the "Saturday Night Live" band for 28 years.

Prior to the performance, Turre will be holding a free master class at 5 p.m. at the Temple Theatre.

Some of the jazz masters he has performed with include Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, J.J. Johnson, Ray Charles, Woody Shaw, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Art Blakey, Curtis Fuller, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Ray Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Lester Bowie, Pharoah Sanders, Dexter Gordon, Jackie McClean, Cedar Walton, Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Manny O'Quendo, Giovanni Hedalgo, Chucho Valdez, Eddie Palmeri, Charlie Palmeri, Oscar D'Leon, Ruben Blades, Hector Lavoe, Stanley Turrentine, Van Morrison, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Jon Faddis/The Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, Slide Hampton, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Hugh Masakela, Mariam Makeba, Bobby Hutecherson, Milt Jackson, Hank Jones, Milt "the Judge" Hinton, Papa Joe Jones, Philly Joe Jones, and Pepper Adams, Joe Williams, Al Green, Quincy Jones, Harry "Sweets" Edison, "Machito," Aerosmith and Wynton Marsalis.

The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra is directed by Gregg Gelb and feratures guest percussionist Brevan Hampden.

Concert tickets are $18 for adults and $10 students/children (general admission).
