The Rooster's Wife continues the tradition of Sunday evening shows in the listening room of Poplar Knight Spot, 114 Knight St., Aberdeen, on Sunday, Sept. 23, with an exciting co-bill.
Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin will open the evening with her soaring voice and his amazing musicianship. Noted songwriter Caleb Hawley and his full band will present Hawley's latest project, "We All Got Problems."
There is seating inside, and outside under the awning and under the stars. Picnics are welcome .
On paper, Caleb Hawley's resume reads as the standard "Who's Who" for up-and-coming songwriters. Then you hear him sing, and you realize only one word is necessary to describe him: extraordinary.
From his ability to write intricate lyrics with cutting-edge chords to his lightning- fast licks and ear for taste and style, there is absolutely nothing average about this shaggy-haired, blue-eyed, multifaceted musician.
Receiving top honors in the prestigious New York Songwriters Circle Contest (2008 and 2009), the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (2009), the Telluride Festival (2010), the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (2010), and Rocky Mountain Folks Fest (2011) for his songwriting, he also has a voice to place him in the final 50 on the 2011 "American Idol" season.
Sharing the stage with industry greats such as Mark Cohn, Rusted Root, Dave Matthews Band, Shawn Mullins and Edwin McCain, this diverse songwriter has written and produced three albums. Hawley has toured the country playing sold-out venues and nationwide festivals. His passion began simply with a guitar and a love for a wide variety of music from Metallica to Martin Sexton.
Shortly after graduating from Berklee College of Music with a degree in jazz composition, Hawley discovered a knack for songwriting. He made his way to New York City to pursue his newfound ambitions. While his lyrics are influenced by observational writers such as Randy Newman and Tom Waits, Hawley is well-known for his outstanding vocal capacity and range.
This humble performer captivates audiences with soothing folk tunes in the same manner as James Taylor, and with the next breath blows them away with his powerhouse of soul.
Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin have long been recognized as artists of distinctive note: Kristi Rose as a powerful and evocative singer and writer, Fats Kaplin as a composer and master multi-instrumentalist, who, over several decades, has played with hundreds of artists.
Together they are mesmerizing performers of a highly eclectic musical genre. Though they remain firmly rooted in the Americana world, their stage presence evokes memories of the flamenco performances of Seville and the cabarets of 1920s Berlin.
Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin visit Aberdeen for the first time, fresh from his European tour with Jack White. They will open the show at 6:45.
The doors open at 6 p.m. for this week's show. Admission is $15.
