Patriots Sweep in Cross Country

Runners for the Pinecrest girls took the first eight places in Tuesday’s second Southeastern Conference tri-meet of the season held at The Elks Club course on Tuesday afternoon.

The Patriot boys also breezed to their second victory in a row, taking seven of the top 10 spots.

The Patriot girls in order of finish were: Rachel Von Cannon (24:11), Kara Zoellner (24:14), Jaleigh Jensen (24:24), Kelsey Rae (24:25), Jennie Cunningham (24:25), Sarah Pressley (24:25), Zia Matti (24:26) and Mulloy Manning (24:27).

Finishing second and third behind the Patriots’ Javier Bustos (18:43) in the boys’ 5K race were teammates Graham Hawes (19:12) and Robert Anderson (19:16).

Also for the Patriot boys, Brandon Elliott finished fifth (19:23), Neil Clark was ninth (20:22) and Nathan Pollard came in 10th (20:23).

The team scores in the girls’ race were Pinecrest 15, Scotland 50, Purnell Swett (no score). In the boys’ race the team scores were Pinecrest 24, Scotland 42 and Purnell Swett 74.

About 20 teams are expected to compete at the Patriot Derby Classic hosted by Pinecrest on Saturday. The first of four open and championship races held at Carolina Horse Park in Raeford are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

Pinecrest, Union Pines, Richmond Senior, South View, New Hanover, Hoggard and Jack Britt are among the teams entered in Saturday’s event.
