Falcon Girls Perfect in Cross Country

The O’Neal cross country teams were close to perfect Tuesday in sweeping a tri-met with Lee Christian School and Cape Fear Christian in Sanford.

The Falcon girls posted a perfect 15-point score by taking the top-five finishes, with the Falcon boys narrowly missing the same in finishing with 16 points in winning their respective races.

Returning senior Savannah Merritt led the Falcons, taking first overall with a time of 22 minutes, 13 seconds in her first race of the season. In second came Hunter Atkinson at 24:50. Separated by only 90 seconds were Aleksandra Majka at 26:27, Julia Huesa at 27:49, and Allison Johnson at 27:57 to secure the girls’ team score.

They were followed by teammates Megan Bloom (seventh, 28:45), Cydney Baldwin (eighth, 29:19), Bronti Viskovich (ninth, 29:24), team captain Courtney Morrison (11th, 31:25), Mary Catherine Coltrane (12th, 33:59) and Sierra Timme (13th, 34:01).

Freshman Josh Russell took first overall for the O’Neal boys in 21:36, his best posted time of the season. Andy Smetana took second in 21:43 with Kyle Flechsig pulling in at third for a 22:40 finish.

Closing up the boys’ team score were Josh Hager in fifth at 23:44 and in sixth John Grimm at 24:03. Also running for the boys’ team were Jesse Ingham (seventh, 24:28), Ian Johnson (eighth, 27:15), Evan Jones (11th, 28:20), Harvey Anderson (12th, 28:41), John Anderson (13th, 29:02) and Spencer Barr (17th, 33:47).
