The Pinecrest volleyball team took command with nine service aces in the first set on the way to a 25-9, 25-15 and 25-15 sweep over Lumberton in its Southeastern Conference opener at home Thursday evening.

The Patriots take an 8-0 record into a weekend that includes matches against Laney and Mount Tabor in Wilmington on Saturday. They entertain Scotland High on Tuesday in an early conference showdown.

Mary Grace Phipps had three aces during an opening five-point service run. Megan Thomas was next, serving for seven straight points (two aces) and Felicia Painter followed a short time later with five (three aces), making it 19-3.

Problems with return of serve continued to plague the visitors in the second set when Painter served for eight more of her 18 total service points. When the Pirates managed to get the ball across, Thomas, the Patriot setter, distributed the ball masterfully on the way to recording 36 assists.

Janea Williams was set up by both Thomas and Katie Smith in the second game for seven of her match-high 15 kills. Smith served for five points in a row in the third set as the home team completed it’s eighth sweep of the season.

Painter and Phipps finished with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Phipps also served for 13 points. Keegan Lynch was credited with six digs.

Scotland High, Tuesday’s opponent, is also 8-0, and is also seeking its eighth conference title in a row. The Scots have lost only one set this season.

Pinecrest dropped their first set of the season on Saturday in Wilmington to Laney, but won the match 3-1 against the host Bucs 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16. I haven't heard how Pinecrest fared against Mount Tabor in the second game of the tri-match. Does anybody know? I know Mount Tabor swept Laney 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-23) in the third match.
