Pinecrest defeated visiting Union Pines Wednesday in intra-county nonconference volleyball action.
The Patriots improved to 7-0 with a 25-20, 25-10 and 25-13 sweep against the now 6-5 Vikings. They enjoyed a large size and experience advantage over the visiting squad made up of sophomores and freshmen with the exception of two seniors.
The leading terminator for the Patriots was senior Janea Williams with 11 kills. Felicia Painter and Amber Goodwin had seven each and Mary Grace Phipps added five. Setter Megan Thomas was credited with 22 assists.
The Patriots were scheduled to entertain Lumberton in their Southeastern Conference opener on Thursday. The Vikings had a home date with Cape Fear Valley Conference foe, Southern Lee.

Should be a great match-up when Pinecrest (7-0) and Scotland County (8-0) meet for the first time this season in SEC play on September 11th in Southern Pines. Both teams have started the year red-hot, with the Patriots yet to drop a set (21/0) and the Scots having only dropped one (24/1). Neither team has yet to really be tested thus far, but something will have to give next Tuesday night at Pinecrest. Of course, both teams will have to take care of business in their respective SEC openers tonight, as the Patriots hosted Lumberton while Scotland entertained Purnell Swett.
The Lady Scots come in as the defending Southeastern 4A Conference regular season and tournament champions, having won or shared the last 7 regular season conference volleyball titles in a row (tied with Jack Britt in 2006), dating back to the old Mid-Southeastern Conference. The last time Scotland didn't finish on top in volleyball was the 2004 season, when a Pinecrest team that went on to finish 27-4 and made it to within one game of playing for a state championship (lost in 5 sets to eventual runner-up, J.H. Rose) was the last to knock the Scots off from atop the heap.
