Rape Remark Was a Welcome Reminder

I think we all owe a great debt of gratitude to Indiana GOP Senate candidate Richard Mourdock. No, really. I mean it. At a time when it was looking like people might start actually believing flimflam artist Mitt Romney's transparently false attempt to shake his Etch A Sketch and "tack to the center," someone like Mourdock comes along to remind us of what the Republican Party really stands for.
I've got to tell you, if I were Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, I'd have sent out a memo months ago telling every GOP candidate for every elected office, from president to prom king: "For God's sake, if anyone brings up rape, change the subject!" Because it seems that anytime the subject comes up, some far-right ideologue manages to say something (a) stupid; or (b) downright horrifying.
Problem is, the difficult topic of rape keeps coming up. It forces the right to face one of the thornier problems of its stance against a woman's right to choose: Would you force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest?
Different candidates have dealt with this question in different ways. A few weeks ago, you had Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, who dealt with the question by denying scientific reality and essentially making up his own. He claimed that he'd heard from doctors that pregnancies from rape are "really rare" - that "if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
This led to a firestorm of indignation and well-deserved derision. While some on the right, particularly Mike Huckabee and the Family Research Council, defended Akin, the bulk of the party decided to back away from defending the idea that you could separate sexual assault into "legitimate" and "illegitimate" categories, not to mention the completely bogus notion that a woman's body provides a magic shield against becoming pregnant by rape if it's "legitimate."
At least they did at first. Now, it seems, some conservative Super PACs, such as Sen. Jim DeMint's Senate Conservatives Fund, are deciding to try to raise money for the guy who believes in "legitimate rape."
Just as the Akin furor was dying down and Mitt was playing at being a moderate once again by claiming, "There's no legislation with regard to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda" (after claiming he'd be a "proudly pro-life president" and promising to defund Planned Parenthood), along comes Mourdock.
Asked if there'd be any exception to his anti-choice stance, Mourdock allowed as how he'd graciously let a mother choose to live if her pregnancy might kill her. As for rape or incest, he said, "I think that even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."
Really? A woman gets raped, her rapist makes her pregnant, and that's all part of God's perfect plan?
In addition to "legitimate rape," we're now supposed to believe in "rape with pregnancy intended by God"? I'm glad that, while I do believe in God, he's not a God that thinks women being made pregnant against their will is just what he intended. Such a God would be some kind of sadistic cosmic psychopath.
Mourdock, however, isn't getting the Akin treatment. The party is still sending him cash. No doubt the leadership reasoned, "Hey, if we start throwing every nutball under the bus after he says something stupid or offensive to women, pretty soon we won't have any candidates left."
Honorable John McCain said Mourdock should apologize, but then walked the demand back the very next day. As for Romney, even though spokeswoman Andrea Sauls asserted that "Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock's comments, and they do not reflect his views," Lord Romney, the High Sheriff of Flip-Flopshire, has endorsed Mourdock.
He's even cut a campaign ad on his behalf that's running in Indiana right now. This is called "trying to have it both ways." It's also called "transparently cynical and unworthy of a man who claims he's a leader." Among other things.
So thank you, Mr. Mourdock. Thanks for reminding us, once again, of what the GOP really is: the home of right-wing religious crazies who try to parse and partition various "kinds" of rape, and the alleged moderates who have to grit their teeth and embrace them for political gain.
Meanwhile, I just voted for the president who says unequivocally, "Rape is rape," and that we don't want "politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women's health care decisions."

The republican party stands for tax breaks for the rich, wars where there is oil, lying, denial of human rights like at gitmo and places like Darfur where there is no oil. It stands for stupidity, hypocrisy, and rewarding big business for stealing and moving jobs out of the country. The republican party ignores the plight of our inner cities and public schools. They believe in, oh wait, holy crap, those are things OBAMA and the democrats apparently believe in because that's what obama gave us for 4 years! Hmmm..does mathews and madcow know about this because I know they sure were upset with that bush about the very exact same things. Called him the devil. mathews nearly had tears in his eyes when discussing the plight of the poor and $2 gas after those unfair tax breaks!

Big Bird, Binders, Sandra Flucke and taxpayer funded birth control and abortions and now Senate candidate Richard Mourdock and dumb remarks while disregarding all the important American economic issues and also the administrations fiasco and cover up in Benghazi. You guys are on a roll...Keep it up! So predictable on your Sunday columns...negativity. Nothing to focus on what needs to be done to get our country back on track. No problem...Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan has 100% of the country in mind and their plan to lead our congress and nation back into common sense and reason and their plan evens includes you. Romney has mentioned on how Obama is concentrating on small things when BIG issues are on the agenda for him. Once again you and others verify that small thing fixation. You are stuck on stupid and negativity once again...Mike

Good article Dusty. The extreme views expressed by Mr. Mourdock are a reflection of today's GOP. They've sold their soul to the lunatic fringe of their party and it will deliver a 2nd straight defeat in the Presidential elections.
The Republican brand will be as good as dog food after November and they will have to redefine themselves in order to survive.

Obama knows about rape alright. He stood by and allowed our Ambassador to be RAPED ans MURDERED while he watched for seven hours!! The possablility that Obama did nothing because he did not want it to undermine his campaign of "We got Osama and Al Qaeda is on their heels?" If he is guily of that ,and I believe he is, then there is no punishment harsh enough! The deaths of those brave men rest solely on the shoulders of Obama but being the gutless coward that he is, he will continue to shift blame as he always does.

Want the real story on this topic from a writer who - unlike this one - will actually cover the topic in an intellectually honest way?
I recommend Mona Charon's latest commentary:
Rape, God, and Liberals: The press continues to paint pro-life politicians as extremists. By Mona Charen
CONCLUSION QUOTE: "It’s obviously a ghastly thing for a woman to be raped and to find herself pregnant as a consequence. What Mourdock was saying, if inartfully, was that the child so conceived is innocent, and doesn’t deserve to die because of the crime of his or her father. He understands that this is a tough issue. It makes everyone horribly uncomfortable. But the liberal answer — abort the child or else be accused of approving of rape — is a slimy abuse of tragedy and a disgrace to civil discourse."

Women have the right to health care, the same as men do. Men, and the far Right, do not have the right to make decisions on a woman’s body. Why is this a topic that is up for debate? It is sickening; we poor simple minded little women don't have the smarts to make up our own minds?
Please note I'm not saying Republicans, I'm saying the far right. As easy as it is to lump all republicans in together it simply isn't true. I have plenty of family and friends who are republicans, but believe in Gay Marriage, Women’s Rights, and all other kinds of crazy new wave ideas.
But, sadly, what my friends and family don't realize is that if they were to try to run for office, and be honest about their ideals, the Republican Party would not support them. This is one of the main problems with the Reps of today. I just can't figure out why the majority of the party doesn't realize what a bunch of hate mongers they are lumping themselves in with. All of these far Right should simply call themselves what they really are, either Tea-baggers, or what they really are which is a Hate Group. If the Reps really want to move forward, and represent "all 100%" of this country (which again, Romney is not, HE SAID IT HIMSELF, how can people still try to deny his 47% comment) then they need to step back and realize that a separation of their party is needed. To represent the country, you have to take into account the changes in the people.
LGBT members no longer have to hide their lifestyle in fear of being beaten or killed. Women no longer have to go to sketchy clinics, or resort to a coat hanger. And guess what, women and African Americans are now allowed to vote. So, supporting or defending people who make uneducated, dark aged comments are not helping your party! I think my own Grandfather, a hard core Republican, is rolling over in his grave at the hated his party now supports.

"I think my own Grandfather, a hard core Republican, is rolling over in his grave at the hated his party now supports."
Then again, he might tell you to not be so darn gullible and believe all the garbage the left is distributing. He might tell you to be more concerned about the 16T national debt. He might tell you to be a little curious as to why big media is not more curious about what went down in Behghazi. He might tell you birth control pills are about $20/monthly or roughly 4 visits to Starbucks so stop whining about it.

First of all, this is old news. Second of all, I remember Romney asking for Akin's resignation days after he made the comment.
I think this article is a shining example of the content that the left is relying on at this point in the election. God forbid DR write an article on the happenings of Benghazi and how our CURRENT leadership allowed 4 American's to die and then lied about the whole story to cover it up.
No...that's not newsworthy. Let's talk some more about the rape comment from a few months ago.
dustyrhoades 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Mourdock's comments were made during a debate on October 23, not 'months ago."
If you can't be bothered to get even that basic fact right, why should anyone listen to a word you say? And if you say you remember Romney asking for Mourdocks' resignation, you're either hallucinating or lying. I'm going for lying.

Fugitiveguy: My grandfather was a great Man, Christian, Vet and Republican. What he would say is that he was ashamed of his party, for trying to deny rights to Gays and Women. He would also say that as a Nation, and humans, we should always be moving forward, not back. And taking rights from fellow Americans, rather you agree with them or not, is wrong. To add to that point, we are supposed to be "One Nation, Under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for ALL", not just for the chosen few.
I'm not saying that birth control should be free. Or even that Medicaid or other government funded insurance should pay for birth control. But if I pay for my insurance, I should have the right to get birth control with it. Also, if you talk to a Dr, you would learn that Birth control has many, MANY health benefits, just one of them is that it greatly reduces the risk of osteoporosis. As for the cost, sure, you can find BC pills that are about 20$, but most are more, and is that really even the point?
Furthermore, Insurance doesn't cover the cost of an abortion, unless it is for medical reasons. So should someone whose life is at risk be forced to pay full price for an abortion? I guess women are a dime a dozen, and to some it's ok to risk her life, if she cannot afford the cost out of pocket, just so that the insurance that she pays for, or her employer in some cases, chooses to deny her that benefit?!?!
I'd also like to point out that we don't see anyone trying to say that Men can't get Viagra from their Insurance, or better yet, that it's wrong and should be illegal. We also don't see the Far Right saying Men's insurance shouldn't cover vasectomies, now do we? But I guess they only have a problem if it's something for a woman, you know, since we just aren't smart enough to decide what's best for us. We need the men folk to do that for us.
GJohn 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Dusty, you are 100% correct - thank you for a great letter! Issues that affect over half the population are at least as vital as the "important economic issues". You've nailed it again.
FugitiveGuy - yes, let's just tell women to take that cheap birth control in case they get legitimately raped so they won't have to have that child that God intended them to have - via rape.
MikeNC - Funny, I don't think a woman would consider being raped to be "a small thing". You are a low life.
101 jackson - the woman should not exspect any funds, aid or special consideration if they have a child be it by choice or resulting in a rape, - Wow, what a low life you are.

How many such imaginery characters have you been busted for by Pilot staff? How many more imaginary DR soldiers do you have in storage? Do you actually believe your stealthy when you muster them out? The small things continue as the large issues are totally ignored..or worse yet; they are covered over with this rubbish in an attempt to make them go away from voters viewing until after the election. It's more convenient to deal with them at that point. I see where the President now wants to look all "Presidential" by staying home during the storm. Too bad he didn't stay home when Benghazi kicked off....Rather then deserting our Ambassador and other Americans at a time of dire need which took their lives. Instead he goes to bed, gets a good nights sleep and then galavants off to Vegas for some fund raising $ $ $ and campaign events...disgusting!

Wow, comparing "illegals" to an actual Rape? To compare people seeking a new home, to someone being physically, mentally and sexually assaulted??? What is wrong with you?
For the record, rape is a lot more widespread than most people realize. Most women do not come forward when it comes to rape, even more so when it comes to someone they know raping them. They know that they will not only have to relive the event, but also stand persecution for someone else’s crime. And now, you all want to make it illegal for them to have an abortion? When their rights and dignity were stripped away from them once already by a rapist? Shame on you.
I just pray that none of you have to deal with someone you love, a wife, daughter, friend and so on being raped. Sadly I'm realizing that for some of you, unless it is that close to home you will never learn compassion or understanding for something you will NEVER truly understand. Again, a government run mostly by men should NOT HAVE A SAY IN WOMEN'S ISSUES when it comes to their bodies and their healthcare choices. And this is exactly why. Immigration is an issue to be discussed, but immigration has NOTHING to do with Rape!!! And it has nothing to do with the Politicians who keep making idiotic statements like a woman’s body can "shut it down" and therefore not get pregnant. Like DR said, some high up in the GOP needs to tell them to keep their mouths shut about issues that they clearly either don't understand, or have no sympathy for.

Colbert is correct. God intended Mourdock to make a jackass of himself. He did. PS: "packwilleat": 20/20 vision uncorrected. You still make no sense whatsever. Try simple declarative statements. One or two syllable words. Stop trying to be clever, cynical or sarcastic. It isn't working.

It amazes me how hateful DR is towards the majority of people who post on this site. I would be embarrassed as heck if I ran this paper. It is said one leads by example. Apparently not here.

I don't lump all democrats together and I don't lump all republicans together. Obviously if someone makes a vile remark he should take responsibility for it and all the fallout that comes with it no matter who they are or what title they hold. We don't have true statesmen/stateswomen leading this country anymore. It has given way to dirty politics, love of power, and pure greed.

GJohn 3 hours, 19 minutes ago.. I am not Dusty Rhoades
Never said you were....Whew Geoff..Thanks...I'll refrain from committing myself to nursing as of yet. We have eradicated many of them 'weeds' but still have plenty left to pull. We may have to retain you to pull our little pine's.
Dusty's getting what he wants here...."Hit's and page read's, that's what it's all about folks" ...I forget what his exact wordage was. Possibly I am going senile :) Hey, he never did address Benghazi...wonder why? Hey Dusty...How many monikers did your "family" have to retire? You must hate that I know so much...and so much yet not revealed... Mike

Why is it that nearly every comment thread descends into a slanging match? It would be much more interesting if y'all would 'play the ball, not the man'. The points you are trying to make get lost among the insults and name-calling, which is a shame.

As ALWAYS lets deflect the failures of Obama to fix the economy and balance the budget to another subject.

AFCHIEF ~ you'll never get these liberals to understand that producers don't pay taxes, the consumer does. All business/corporate taxes are rolled into what the consumer pays. So in essence, liberals are only causing everyone to pay more. Economics truly escapes them.

101jackson....I doubt there is a solution. That's a consequence of people being stuck on stupid and stuck on all the small things rather than the meaningful to America as a whole...do I dare post that picture of LTG Russel Honore again? Nah....that will bring out a 'brand new poster' to scold and correct my grammar....Mike
skylinefirepest 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Some have said that DR posts here under other usernames...I make no comment about that except that there is at least one that we KNOW is not DR....101jackson is a new poster and makes far too much sense to be "Dusty in drag".

101jackson is a new poster
Who yet claims an extensive knowledge of the board's history. Make of that what you will.
Whatever. Beam me up, Scotty, no intelligent life here.

101 good luck with DR being civil I imagine he will threaten to sue since what you wrote might offend him
dustyrhoades 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Mr. Rhoades- Choose your enemies very careful, let a sleeping dog lie, this old dog will come of the porch if you come into his yard, lets just stay on the subject and we can all get along.
This blustering "old dog" is too much of a sniveling coward to use his own name, therefore, I know he isn't going to come off anything, much less his porch.
dustyrhoades 6 months, 3 weeks ago
But the folks on Facebook are getting plenty of lulz out of my sharing 101 Jackson's idiocy with them. Keep it coming, "old dog."
Back to work now, but I'll check in later for more LOLbait.

TLDR for thread:
101jackson threatens to kick DRjr's butt then uses the excuse that DRjr will attack his family(?) and proceeds to angrily grumble over his own uselessness. Also calls DRjr a coward for hiding when 101jackson uses an alias (???).
TAP copies videos I posted weeks ago in an attempt to be clever other than misspelling every other word.
MikeNC still can't spell and complains about others correcting him. Because hurr durr they stuck on stupid.
DRjr messing with posters in his article and they come back for more. Delivering page hits and guaranteed new articles by DRjr.
Another fun day on the Pilot. Stay classy.

The Rethuglican rage monkeys won't be able to help themselves.
Love how 101Jackson basically admits that he's afraid of me. He's posting under his alias because he thinks "his family might be in danger." Which is completely absurd, but that's the nature of cowardice. You're afraid of things that'll never happen.

I just finished watching a movie on-line (free for the next two weeks) called "Agenda -- Grinding Down America. It's long, an hour and thirty minutes, but well worth watching. If you've wondered how Obama, a hack Chicago politician, came out of no where to become president and what his agenda for "fundamentally changing America" is, this movie will give you the answers. It starts a bit slow but keeps getting better.
The link ( http://vimeo. com/52009124 ) was sent to me by a friend. The words above are his but I took him at his word and I, too, just finished watching and now encourage all to see how we have been duped and used for years......

TLDR for thread: 101jackson threatens to kick DRjr's butt
Actually. JD, if anyone at all took that as a serious threat, I have it on good authority that the paper would pull aside the veil of anonymity in a heartbeat. (Food for thought for you Internet wannabe tough guys). But, of course, everyone knows no one can take 101Jackson's bluster for anything but posturing.
