Two Falcon Harriers Earn All-League Honors

The Cape Fear Independent Conference cross country championship Wednesday took O’Neal out to Wilmington to race on the home course of Cape Fear Academy.

The Falcons’ Andy Smetana and Hunter Atkinson earned honors as all-conference runners. Smetana placed 10th in the boys’ race with a personal-best time of 19:30. Smetana recently joined the team after moving from California earlier in the year. Atkinson, a freshman, finished third with a time of 22:20.

The Falcon girls finished in fourth place out of five teams entered with a score of 91. Village Christian Academy took first with a score of 38.

O’Neal’s Atkinson was followed by scorers Aleksandra Majka (16th, 24:02), Julia Huesa (17th, 24:12), Cydney Baldwin (28th, 26:11) and Megan Bloom (29th, 26:15). Other Falcons competing included Allison Johnson (34th, 26:46) and Courtney Morrison (35th, 27:08), Sierra Timme (36th, 27:28) and Mary Catherine Coltrane (43rd, 29:17).

For the boys, freshman Josh Russell took 13th with a 20:11 finish. Captain Kyle Flechsig followed closely in 15th at 20:17. John Grimm (24th, 22:11) and Jesse Ingham (26th, 22:33) closed the boys’ team score.

Other Falcon runners were Josh Hager (31st, 23:18), Ian Johnson (32nd, 23:37), Harvey Anderson (33rd, 24:24), Evan Jones (34th, 24:38), John Anderson (35th, 26:04) and Spencer Barr (38th, 30:03).

O’Neal is competing in the NCISAA state 2-A championships in Cary today.
