When you talk about the Sandhills Patriots youth football organization, you might want to talk about building a dynasty.
The Sandhills Patriots varsity team recently defeated the Richmond County Raiders 19-0, running its mark in the 2012 PYFL season to 7-0.
Even more impressive is that the Patriot varsity squad is 50-0 in PYFL play over the last four- and-a-half seasons, and has won three consecutive PYFL Super Bowls (championship game). The Patriot organization has also won six North American Youth Football championships over the last four years in various age groups.
The one common denominator during this incredible run has been the presence of defensive coordinator Craig Baggett and offensive coordinator Tom Van Camp. Baggett credited the team’s success to not only talented players, but a committed and dedicated coaching staff, tremendous community support, and great parents.
This year’s varsity squad has faced major obstacles in the form of injuries. Before the season started, the team lost Langdon McFay to a shoulder injury. The team awaits his return just in time for the playoffs. Other key contributors, including Austin Metzger and Nik Pry, have been sidelined for the season.
Notwithstanding the injury bug, the Patriots have managed to outscore their opponents 152-0 heading into the final regular-season game.
Offensively, the Patriots have been led by quarterback Zach Martinez, running backs Jeremiah Anderson and Jaren Lubrano, and receiver Tyrese Kelly. On the defensive side of the ball, Naphish Vincent, Travon Brown, JT Adams and Charles Justice have kept the Patriot goal line secure.
After winning the PYFL Junior Varsity Super Bowl in 2011, the Patriot jayvee team has run its record to 6-1 and is in first place in the AFC conference.
The jayvee team is led by quarterback Pres Ostert, who has thrown multiple touchdown passes to receivers Fulton Smith and Michael McNeill. Running backs Armaad Horton, Matthew Lewis and Zyheem Kelly have all made major contributions to the squad’s running game. Zaythan Hill and Chamar Evans anchor the Patriots offensive line and lead the defense, both playing defensive end.
Following the PYFL playoffs, the Patriots will take three teams to Knoxville, Tenn., to participate in the Battle in Rocky Top.
