It’s odd sometimes how the things you think are going to end up being a big deal aren’t, and the things that end up being a big deal are the ones you wouldn’t have suspected.
This was recently illustrated in the aftermath of the latest debate between President Barack Obama and Lord Mitt Romney, the Earl of Etch A Sketchington, and how a comment by His Lordship made “binders full of women” an Internet sensation.
When asked by a member of the audience how the candidates would deal with the issue of gender inequality in the workplace, in particular pay inequality between men and women, Obama noted that the first bill he signed was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which increases the ability of women to seek recourse against discriminatory pay practices.
He mentioned education, particularly Pell grants, which allow both men and women better access to education. He promised enforcement of anti-discrimination laws.
When it was Lord Mitt’s turn, he began with a recollection of how he’d hired a bunch of women for Cabinet positions when he became governor of Massachusetts:
“Well, gosh,” he said, “can’t we — can’t we find some — some women that are also qualified?” He went on to relate: “I went to a number of women’s groups and said, ‘Can you help us find folks,’ and they brought us whole binders full of women.”
Now, I confess, I didn’t pay much attention to that phrase when Romney said it. It went right by me, probably because I was too busy griping that Romney hadn’t done squat to answer the actual question. But hoo-boy, did some people, mainly women, notice it.
“Minutes after” the fateful phrase was uttered, it was “lighting up Twitter and had already spawned a new website,” according to The L.A. Times. The
website (http://bindersfullof women.tumblr.com/) mocked Romney’s phrasing in typical online fashion, with references to various other Internet memes and sarcastic pictures.
It didn’t end there. Someone created a Facebook page that immediately garnered more than 200,000 positive votes (“Likes,” in Facebook parlance). USA Today dubbed “binders” its “Obama-Romney Word of the Day.” It seems a lot of people found the image of Mittens paging through “binders full of women” more than a little creepy.
You knew the phrase was really taking hold when conservative pundits started whining that the Obama campaign was “trivializing” the issue by bringing up the words their candidate actually used. Pro tip: When they’re whining, you’re winning.
Then people who were actually around in Massachusetts at the time Romney took office began to speak up, and — surprise! — it turns out that he was playing fast and loose with the truth. Again.
Romney’s former lieutenant governor noted that the “binders” were prepared by a group called the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus, through a program they called MassGAP. In a statement from that group released Wednesday, spokesman Liz Levin noted that Romney hadn’t come to them after the election; they’d come to both him and his opponent, Shannon O’Brien, before the election even took place, and that “both campaigns made a commitment” to work with them on hiring more women.
And while they applauded Romney’s initial commitment, which resulted in women filling “42 percent of the new appointments made by the Romney administration,” they noted that “from 2004-2006 the percentage of newly appointed women in these senior appointed positions dropped to 25 percent.”
But the initial question, and the big issue, wasn’t about whether Romney’s a good guy for perusing “binders full of women” to find candidates for Cabinet posts. It was about gender inequality in the workplace. So what did Lord Romney or his campaign have to say about the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which, as noted above, increases the ability of women to seek redress for income discrimination in the workplace?
Well, according to Romney spokesman Ed Gillespie, Romney opposed the passage of the bill, but would not repeal it.
Then, the very next day, Gillespie performed one of the flip-flops that have become such a regular part of the Romney campaign that no one in the mainstream media even seems to comment on them anymore: Romney, Gillespie told the political blog Talking Points Memo, “never weighed in on [the Act]. As president, he would not seek to repeal it.”
Once again, Mittens displays the breathtaking ability to take up to three positions on a single issue within the space of 24 hours: He doesn’t support it, takes no position on it, but won’t repeal it.
Awkward, out-of-touch, and condescending remarks, lies and shameless flip-flops, followed by whining about what people are quoting what the candidate actually said. Just another day on the campaign trail for His Lordship.

As soon as he said it, Dusty, I repeated it as a question to my husband: "Binders full of women?" We wondered if it was a Mormon thing maybe. But no, it really was just another man in charge who apparently never had many or any women underlings. He's obviuosly not comforatble with women and is a really bad bully. That disqualifies him to be President. Afterall, he was a Governor in 2004? And he knew of no qualified women to hire? Sorry and sorryier.

The only question worth asking is did women have a significant place in Romneys cabinet during his term as governor. If the answer is yes then to any reasonble and fair minded person Romney would should be commended for it. But we are not dealing with a fair minded, reasonable person, are we?

The simple point is women were offended by what Romney said, I was offended. But do we really expect any more from someone who thinks women shouldn't have control over their own bodies? Who knows, maybe he just thinks us poor little women just aren't smat enough to make up our own minds. As mad and for lack of a better word, grossed out as I was to hear "Binders full of Women", I can't say I was shocked, maybe shocked that he actually said it during the debate, when he knew he was on National TV, but from all of his other comments, this one is just par for the course. Also, I'm still waiting to hear what loop holes he's going to close. Saying over and over he has a 5-point plan does not answer the question. The only reason to spend so much time avoiding giving an answer, is you know that the general public won't like what you have to say. Or, he might just think we aren't smart enough to understand his plan.
GJohn 7 months ago
To luvlife, etc.: It's great that you admire the man. But, why? For being born rich? For growing up with advantages that others don't have, then castigating them because they don't have those advantages? For being a member of a religious sect that subverts women and declares themselves clean and non-members unclean? For pandering to the wealthy and kicking the poor?
No rich man has the right to speak for all Americans. He doesn't know anything about life for the 99%.
fugitiveguy 7 months ago
Wow, women in the Obama White House are paid less than men? Well, lets give him a pass on that too, right lefties?
luvlife 7 months ago
GJohn, being born rich does not guarantee success in life. His parents' bank account did not get his ass up every morning to perform in school, to begin his career and to build his businesses. It takes A LOT of effort. There are MANY available options for the less fortunate - they just have to PURSUE them. Unfortunately, we're raising generations of kids that would rather get in a welfare line, than work hard to support themselves. I don't have a problem with helping people. There are a lot of single Moms out there that need help, but can't we agree that welfare, etc is becoming a career choice for too many people! What happened to ambition, desire and hard work??

packwilleat, your article is from a right wing source which makes your argument probably a lie, so prove it. You can't. Equal pay for equal work means that a woman secretary of state has to make the same as a male secretary of state. Since we don't have a man to compare to, well the argument is mostly moot. Therefore, show us two of Obama's staff with the same job title and the same experience(time at job) and lets then compare the salaries.

First of all, the "binders" story as a bald faced lie, so what else is new? Romney received the binders way before he was putting his cabinet together. So the story was just that, another falsehood from good old Mitt. Add that to his tall tale about meeting Glenn who was killed in the attack in Libya, discounted by Glenn's best friend who was there. Romney came up to Glenn 4 times in 30 minutes and introduced himself 4 times! According to his friend who called all major news stations and was recorded, Glenn thought Romney was a loser who couldn't even remember his face after talking to him! Romney has a propensity for making up stories to try to make himself look human. The "binders" was a gaffe, a putdown of the worth of woman. Ask yourself why this person who has been in business for so long had no women in his employ he could consider for any position in his cabinet? I rank this right up with Ryan washing those already clean pans at the homeless shelter. Pure theatrics and it backfired on him, as it should.

Reviews of Romney's Binders:
http://www.amazon.com/Avery-Durable-Binder-EZ-Turn-17032/product-reviews/B001B0CTMU
By Kefsmom (MD) - See all my reviews This review is from: Avery Durable View Binder with 2 Inch EZ-Turn Ring, White, 1 Binder (17032) (Office Product) I was originally going to rate this only 1 star. You see, I'm a big girl and I can only squeeze about 53% of myself into this binder. But then I decided that I'm not going to worry about the other 47%.
By Geoff Read - See all my reviews This review is from: Avery Durable View Binder with 2 Inch EZ-Turn Ring, White, 1 Binder (17032) (Office Product) While I've found all the reviews of this product most enlightening I couldn't help but notice that they all seemed to be penned by women. I thought I'd set the record straight with a male perspective. Ladies, take note. I purchased the Avery binder about a year ago. Before I had this product, my women were everywhere. I ran into them in the halls, they were in my home, sometimes occupying the bathroom for long hours, it was basically chaos. Once I acquired my binder, however, everything just made sense. Whenever I need someone with an innate capacity for home economics to rush home and cook my dinner, I open my binder and presto, there's my lady. I usually let her know how much I appreciate her contribution with a firm open-palmed smack on the behind. In my experience, women love that kind of affirmation, and if they don't get it they lose self-esteem. If by chance, a woman I pull out of the binder doesn't live up to my expectations or objects to the pat on the bum, I've created a special section deep at the back of my binder and I consign her there never to be called upon again. In short, the binder has created order from chaos. In many ways, it helps to restore what I think we all feel deep in our hearts to be the natural order. I recommend this product most highly.

luvlife: How can you equate hard work with wealth? Do you have any idea how hard some people work every day - and will never be rich? Before I retired, I was a teacher. NOBODY works any harder than a hardworking teacher - not Romney, not you, not anybody - and we were paid starvation wages just like they are now. I know there are other lines of work that are just the same. If Romney inherited his money or receives interest payments, that's fine - there's nothing wrong with that - until the wealthy decide that those who DON"T have that are lazy welfare bums. In addition, I DON"T want a man who thinks he's "clean" by virtue of being a Mormon and all non-members (taxpayers) are "unclean" - and we can't worship in his church - running America.

packwilleat 7 months ago
I'm not going to completely discredit the hard work of teachers. It's a tough job without doubt. But to say that "NOBODY works harder than a hardworking teacher" is completely asinine. The majority of teachers I have encountered in my life have been full time isolationist of academia. It's impossible to be open minded to the work force when many teachers have only held part time jobs in high school or college, then go full time in the class room as an instructor. Sure, there are the few that own and operate their own businesses and teach part time. Those are the only instructors I gave any credit to. Their logic and rationale was head over heels above the limp brained, robots of academia.

Ah yes, another brilliant comment from "packwilleat", this time concerning those who teach. Is it sarcasm or meant to be serious? Who is to know given that it comes from one who thinks "jackwagon" is a real word, but then again progressing beyond one syllable is progress. So, full time teachers are to be denigrated (I know, tough word, look it up)? On the other hand part time teachers who have a "business" and teach as a second job to support their "business" are to be venerated (again tough word, but look it up)? The intellectual content of that which "packwilleat" posts doesn't dazzle us with it's brilliance.
The_AnonymusProfit 7 months ago
And Again oldpilot treads into water that is above his head, and again he does not understand the context of the statement. This is not altogether unexpected considering the previous positions he has held. OldPilot, the fact that you do not understand the very obvious point in packs post shows the out of touch mindset you have.
Instead of insinuating that pack is incapable of independent reasoning and abstract thought( OldPilot ill understand if you have to pull out your thesaurus) how about taking a look at the lack of ability to project your own thoughts credibly on this forum??
The fact that one would have to spell out the basis of packs post, which in fact is very accurate and in no way denigrating to anyone shows your monolithic inability to understand how the current incarnation of our public education system has failed at every level to perform to any set of standards that could be even remotely considered plausible by any grading system.
Your intellectual failings are your own OldPilot, stick to the planes, this arena is a step or two above your ability to comprehend.

OK, boys and girls, let's look at this from another angle. Packwilleat and Diane, let's pay attention, please. My point is that teachers (and other careers, as I said) work extremely hard; they spend countless unpaid hours working for their students under ridiculous conditions. However, teachers make very little money compared to the work they do and the contribution they make. According to luvlife, that makes them unsuccessful. Consider a wealthy person who has a lot of money acquired through inheritance and/or investments. Luvlife was insinuating that the wealthy person had worked hard and deserved the money. I am saying that many people work hard but don't earn the money. And they missed the real point of the post. Romney, a rich man who doesn't understand the majority of Americans, has no right to run this country. He thinks the same thing: if you're poor, it's because you're dumb or lazy. Not so.
The_AnonymusProfit 7 months ago

In context the binders are resumes, nothing more and nothing less. aspects might have been fine but I was and still am looking for a little more fire and international direction. The Bayonet and horses comment was plain stupid in the light the bayonet is STILL a Marine weapon never left and the initial charge into Afghanistan was a Calvary of mounted And to try to make a referendum on this is plain stupid. I would expect better of Dusty----------maybe not. As to the debate last night; No doubt it was not a sparkling example of you shoot me -I'll shoot you. Romney, it seems, chose not to CONFRONT , but to remain "above the fray" which in some horsemen. Obama has NO CLUE what military needs and has been effectively stripping away the strength and will of American might . When he stated last night the "Sequestration" would NOY happen , it was after the debate when the democrat spinners changed the word to should no happen. George Bush's percentages were only 25% and Bill Clinton's were 37%. Mitt had an Administration with a percentage of only 25% being women at the end of his Governorship which say's more than the 42% he started with. President Obama's 35% is apparently holding. and means a lot. Of course there needs to be more. If the women in the Presidents Administration are being paid less than men it's against the law. Wonder what percentage of each party is made up of women. Then I would wonder if that number corresponds to the number of women in each administration. Oh forget it, nobody here would have missed such an obvious point!

Anyway the bigger story is Romney vs. Romney within 7 minutes. He said he would create 12 million jobs only to then say government doesn't create jobs. Well which is it?
Posted something similar in the 'who creates jobs' thread and still haven't gotten an answer. Also it's funny the 12 million job number Romney is using is the Dept. of Labors projected job growth by 2016. So really he is just promising what is projected to happen anyway.

JD, what do you see as the endgame of a 20T national debt as projected for 2016 if Obama is re elected. Got any kids, grandkids, etc? Who is better suited based on their resume's to fix the debt and get our economy moving? (cite your reasons) Why do over 700 economists (including 6 Nobel laureates) endorse Romney? Aren't you a little tired of Obama reminding us (for the 10,000 time) about the mess he inherited? Don't we deserve better than excuses after 4 years?

I am taking wagers, should Romney win, how long before we see the first column by little Chris Matthews of Carthage on why the budget isn't balanced? Why unemployment isn't 5%. I am guessing about 2 weeks.

Ok so @oldpilot i agree you should do that.
@jeremyg your crude comment sums up ypur opinions. Uneducated and simple.
@moon give it up you lost deal with it
@jimheim your opinions dont matter because you have not done your own research.
Ok that's it i have spoken therefore it is.

Fugly why do you answer a question with a question? Ask more loaded questions next time that might help you blunderbuss in more randomness.
I was commenting on Romney's plan to create 12 million jobs that are already currently predicted to be created. I can promise the sun comes up tomorrow. Does it matter if most in the know already assume that the sun will come up tomorrow? Should I get credit for the sun coming up since I predicted and insisted it would come up?
Bovada Presidential Betting Odds Vegas has Obama 54% Romney 46%. Although Mitt has had a rise from last week being only 38%.

America's debt after WWII (1946) was 120% of GDP. It's now only 30%. Not worried about that but I am worried about the thievery that continues to go on where the rich keep taking and taking. In the latter 20th Century, in the 1980's, the robbing of the Savings and Loans started us on this downward spiral. Gee, that cordinates with Reagan's Presidency, doesn't it? You know that's why we don't have any Savings and Loans anymore? That's where I got my first Home Mortgage, a Savings and Loan. The Military Industrial Complex are the next guilty ones who are rolling our government over and over. If Mitt becomes President, God forbid, I want him to fix everything el pronto. No Honeymoon for him, at all. Mitt seemed to be a sorta decent person while Governor of Mass., although I read that he vetoed about 800 of the legislatures bills. They then overode his veto 750 times. He got along with the Dems? They ran the government by overriding him.

I would also like to add Obama said "fewer"... There were 72,000 horses at the Battle of Gettysburg. How many are used in combat today? Sure, bayonets are still issued, but the last bayonet charge was during the Korean War in 1951. In fact, bayonet training for new recruits stopped 2 years ago -- focusing instead on hand-to-hand combat.
Obama's point was, "the nature of our military has changed". You can hardly argue with that.

I like the story on why that scene happened. If Ford wasn't running an incredibly high fever we would have just gotten some weird whip trick to disarm the guy. Instead Ford asks Spielberg, "can I just shoot him?"

Moonbat ~ read this article, it even has graphs and stuff so you can understand debt/GDP ratio more gooder.

Sure they can, if they misrepresent what was said, then quibble over the misrepresentation. THis kind of thing is what they DO, man. They can never EVER admit that Lord R-money stuck his Gucci-clad foot in his mouth again.

Sounds like you're worried that Mittens can't follow through on his grandiose promises. You should be. He can't. And yeah, if he does win, I'll be pointing out that I was right.

"Fugly why do you answer a question with a question?"
I didn't, but you did. Now would you care to give your take on the 20T debt, the endgame, its effect on future generations and national security? If not, congratulations, you are as qualified as Obama to be president.

Moon debt to gdp is above 100%15 even your not that dumb....or are you
fugitiveguy 7 months ago
Moon, why was the debt a big deal when it was 10.6T and candidate Obama blasted GWB for it, now its 16T and its just a number to BHO and all the minions. What gives? Isn't 16T>10.6T. What do you think will happen to all those poor people on government assistance when the economy collapses? Does Obama hate poor people? Guess what, there will be a hell of a lot more poor people if we don't get this deficit under control. Maybe you could look into a class on economics at SCC. Maybe all the lefties could get them to set up a special session just for you guys.

I didn't, but you did.
Tell me another story. Or learn what that squiggly line with the dot under it is after sentences. If only there was some show that all people could watch that teaches the basics of English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Congratulations you are as qualified as Obama for President. And you dodge more than Romney. Your argument is so dead that the Mormons baptized it.
