Vote for Picerno

Eight years ago, when we lived in Seven Lakes, Nick Picerno asked me to join him for a get-acquainted cup of coffee. He was running for county commissioner and assumed I would be supporting his opponent, Nancy Fiorillo.

Nancy and I had developed a good working relationship during her years as county planning director. As you remember, Nick won.

During the years I served on the planning board, I believed it important to attend most board of commissioners meetings to understand what they were working on and how, individually and collectively, they went about the business of governing.

Early in my working life I had learned the value of being well-prepared before arguing for, or against, a decision. During Nick’s first term, I was very impressed with the quantity, and especially the quality, of his homework, his preparation for board of commissioners deliberations and decisions.

So, I encourage all Moore County voters to vote for Nick Picerno on Nov. 6. He does his homework.

If it is illegal for the board to discuss the sale of county property behind closed doors and if our BOC did just that, why exactly should I vote for someone who thinks himself above the law ? Neither homework nor preparation would convince me to trust someone who feels the need to do in secret what should be done in public.

Not picking Nick. Prefer someone not lining their pockets with tax payer money and making shady deals behind closed doors.

Dave Kinney like most of those who have sit down with Nick to discuss county operations and commissioner's decisions have preconceived opinions of Nick, unless one is not in total agreement. I too have a temper that complements that of Nick's.

For the most part, I can say I like Nick as a person, albeit he and I do not see county spending the same and I expressed that to him on several occasions. During every lunch meeting, I expressed the same contention, the people are not informed about decisions in advance; there is a total disconnect when it comes to communication by the board to the taxpayers.

After hearing public laws have been broken - Sunshine Law - or open meeting laws, one can justifiable understand failure to communicate.

Personally being denied my Constitutional right to vote on multi-million dollar projects leaves an unsubstantiated interest in voter confidence when our tax dollars are at stake here in Poorer county.

Caddell and Picerno attempted to do the right thing when they placed the '"real estate transfer tax" on the ballot. The proposal was defeated by a wide margin. That was the end of voters voicing their concerns and objections at the ballot box. However, every time the school bond indebtedness is challenged, the same mantra: Well the voters approved the bonds - Not the next time.

Voters who care to know the facts in the upcoming election on spending should make a concerted effort to read the spreadsheet reflecting county indebtedness and perhaps everyone who has an interest can form their own opinions.

Let us not forget that Picerno had a huge conflict of interest as Chairman of Southern Software when he supported the 42 million dollar Detention Center.Do not forget his company, Southern Software's headquarters are local and the Detention Center serves as a grand showroom for thier products of criminal software.Picerno wasted taxpayers money. He agreed to spending 27 million in principal for the Moore County facility for 192 beds when Harnett County built the same facility with 300 beds for 21 million in principal. Moore County also could have saved 11 million if they had built outside of town and built on one level. Do not forget the land, still with major water problems, cost 1.5 million in downtown Carthage!!!! You might say this is old news but it is certainly not a record to run on.

plumblevel ~ "Do not forget the land, still with major water problems",

I haven't verified my information, however, there are rumors circulating to the effect that the parking lot is pumping (spongy). My past experience with pumping, contractors have to dig out all the wet material and fill with clean sand-clay.

The land cost could rise to well over another million or two...wait until the structure starts sinking since steel pilings were never set under the foundation. Costs are just beginning.

Toda Some friends of mine went to the property before they were going to start building. They threw a rock in a hole on the grounds and were immediately splashed with water.I am sure the fact that all the topsoil had been removed before the property was sold did not help either. Dave Kinney Why would you write such a Letter to the Editor when you did not even support Picerno in the last election? I guess the answer is favors and the need to score the vote in Belle Meade and Seven Lakes. The motto for Picerno if anything gets in his way is "I would rather ask forgiveness than ask permission". He certainly denied the citizens of Moore County their right to vote on the 42 million bond issue for the Detention Center. Arrogance does not win votes.

From what I know about Ellen Marcus she is dedicated and hardworking when she takes on something. She will have my vote.
