The North Moore girls’ tennis team wrapped up its season in the Yadkin Valley Conference tournament hosted by Gray Stone in Salisbury Oct. 9-11.
The Lady Mustangs had two players playing in the singles tournament and two doubles teams participating. The top four singles players and doubles teams qualify for the upcoming individual 1-A Western Regional being hosted by East Montgomery Oct. 19-20.
Senior Shannon Marley, who is North Moore’s No. 1 player, was the lone Mustang player to move into second-round play when she defeated South Davidson’s Holly Wall 7-5, 6-4. Wall was the Lady Wildcats’ No. 2 player during the season.
Marley met North Rowan’s Dakota Honeycutt in the second round. Honeycutt, the No. 1 Lady Cavalier, and Marley met twice during the regular season with Honeycutt narrowly winning both matches. Marley lost 9-7 in August and 8-5 in the rematch during September. The third time wasn’t the charm for Marley as Honeycutt swept the match 6-2, 6-4.
Marley’s junior teammate Ciera McDonald lost to South Davidson’s Katelyn Shelton 6-1, 6-1. Shelton was the Wildcats’ top singles player during the season.
In doubles action, North Moore senior Leslie Avila and freshman Mariana Ortuno lost to Gray Stone’s No. 2 doubles team of Rachel Poston and Caby Styers 6-0, 6-0.
The Mustangs’ other doubles team of sophomore Lydia Priest and freshman Stephanie McNeill lost 6-1, 6-4 to South Davidson’s No. 2 doubles team of Madison Sigmon and Lindsay Miller.
The Mustangs finished their season with a 4-9 record for sixth place in the conference. North Moore loses only four seniors off the team for next season. They are Marley, Avila and Cleris Gomez and Sabrina Garner.
Gray Stone captured the YVC regular season championship followed by Chatham Central, East Montgomery, North Rowan, South Davidson, North Moore, Albemarle and South Stanly.
The top-two teams receive automatic berths in the upcoming 1-A state dual team playoffs. There are also six wildcard berths available to teams with the best overall records. The dual team playoffs are scheduled to start Oct. 16.
