Vike Booters Overwhelm Wolverines

The Union Pines boys’ soccer team toppled league opponent Westover by a 9-2 tally Thursday at Woodrow Wilhoit Stadium in Cameron.
It was the second league victory by a blowout margin of the week for the homestanding Vikings, who improved to 5-2 in the 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference standings and 5-10 overall for the season.
Riley O'Neil tallied the first goal of the game for Union Pines by heading in an Adam Howard cross from the right wing just 15 seconds into the match. In the second minute of action Howard found the back of the net on a score assisted by striker Rafael Pastrana.
By halftime Union Pines held a commanding 6-1 lead and was in complete control of the tilt.
“With little pressure from Westover, we were again able to maintain the majority of possession, demonstrate good composure on the ball, and good passing,” said Vike head coach Mike Mibb who saw his Union Pines squad earn a 7-1 victory Wednesday over Douglas Byrd.
“We were again able to substitute freely,” Mibb added, “and play numerous individuals in various positions. Sophomore Chase Herrington again demonstrated positive improvement in the caliber of his play, as did junior defender Juan Hernandez-Dominguez.”
Leonardo Aragon pushed the Viking lead to 3-0 in the 10th minute on a send from Matthew Cooper.
Troy Rooney tallied in minute 16 on Cooper’s second assist of the contest to give the Vikes a 4-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, senior Benjamin Peterson tallied his first career varsity goal as a Viking in the 20th minute on an assist by Howard. Brennan Bullock capped off the first-half scoring for Union Pines in the 25th minute making it a 6-0 lead on Pastrana’s second assist.
Wolverine Johnnie Delgado found the back of the net with four minutes left in the first half to make the score 6-1.
Peterson tallied his second goal of the game nine minutes into the second half to extend the margin to 7-1. With eight minutes left in the league tilt, Howard tallied for a second time on the night as the Union Pines lead swelled to 8-1.
Westover's Dylan Wilhelm made it an 8-2 tally when he scored off a direct free kick from 35 yards out.
Pastrana then capped the scoring on the night with a goal in the 79th minute off a pass from Bullock.
Union Pines returns to the pitch in Cameron Monday for a conference clash against the Overhills Jaguars (4-10, 3-4 CFVC), set to kick off at 7 p.m.
