Reasons to 'Pick Nick'

This nation is about to make some basic choices in the November election. Much will be written about hands-on or hands-off government at the national and state levels. The choice, truly an either/or, appears to be a close call.

Yet some of the most important elections are right here at home. Local government impacts families up close and personal, and I am writing to urge voters to re-elect Nick Picerno to the Moore County Board of Commissioners.

Nick has a proven track record that includes reducing the real estate tax rate, providing funds for major capital projects from internal cash flow, supporting building design choices that resulted in efficiency going forward and maintaining a high standard of public services for residents of Moore County.

There are many challenges facing the new board, including the pending real estate revaluation that most likely will have an impact on all taxpayers as well as funding for county operations. There are challenges in getting Moore County ready for the back to back U.S. Open tournaments.

Nick will work hard to find the money to provide for a quality education at both our school system and at the community college. He enthusiastically supports the economic development projects initiated under the able leadership of Patrick Coughlin of the Chamber of Commerce and Pat Corso at Partners in Progress.

As the bumper sticker says, “Pick Nick” — and let him finish what he has started in Carthage. I endorse Nick as someone with a vision that will maintain Moore County’s unique lifestyle.

Two reasons not to pick Nick: Agenda 21, Marriage equality. Those are two issues that the county commissioners had no business wasting time and money grandstanding over. There are more appropriate priorities.

Walter B. Bull Jr.'s letter is similar to Richard Locke's embellishment of the Great Moon Hoax penned in a brief news item for the New York Sun in 1835 ... history represents facts while diminished gatekeeping allows for the preponderants of meeting in secret to accomplish one's goals not intended for public consumption.
